What ever happened to the Fat Acceptance DU Group? |
|
I remember it being there awhile back, and I went looking for it a few days ago and it was gone.

There was some drama involving the two main contributors and after they were banned, I guess there was not a lot of activity so it was eliminated.

2. Oh, I didn't know that. |
|
That's too bad, I think it's an issue that deserves some discussion here.

11. Being obese is a serious medical condition |
|
The causes are wide and varied -- from glandular malfunction to food addiction to underlying deep psychological trauma. Sometimes you are dealing with all of the above.
The effects can be devastating -- heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer -- at a relatively early age. Look at what happened to John Candy.
Obesity should not be accepted by those suffering from it. Conversely, obese people should be accepted and not discriminated against. They have a medical problem which may require a multi-disciplinary approach to solve.
People with an obesity problem should address it the same way they would if they had hypertension or diabetes. It is serious stuff. It knocks years off of life.
Now I'm not talking about "pleasantly plump". I'm talking about clinical obesity.
A real problem is that those suffering from obesity often dislike themselves intensely. Their escape from this dislike is to eat more -- a vicious circle. So those suffering from obesity need to learn to accept their situation and not hate themselves, so they don't enter the vicious circle, but simultaneously actively work to drop the weight and reduce their chances of early death.

12. is there really any evidence that being fat is linked to early death? |
|
i am not fat, so maybe i'm missing something, but i think we're somewhat being fed a pack of lies when we pretend that hating on fat people is about health, because for every one of your john candy's i can point to two latin american supermodels who died in their 20s
fat people don't die in their twenties of being overweight, it just don't happen, being bulimic or anorexic and being afraid to eat is far more likely to cause an early death in my view -- or getting involved in cocaine to keep the weight down, well, that ain't so good for the heart either
we hear a lot of words about how dangerous being fat is, yet the fact of the matter is that americans are fatter than ever AND americans are living longer than ever
i would say that we need a little less hysteria about fat and a little more science too
certainly i would agree that it's better not to be morbidly obese to the point that you're provably straining your joints and muscle, including the heart muscle...certainly we don't want to encourage people to grow so large they have to be buried in a piano crate...but the majority of fat people are probably not provably more unhealthy than skinny people, are they?
yet we wage no campaigns to insist that skinny people put on weight
if the fat person has good "numbers," decent blood pressure, etc. then maybe we can stop yelling at them so much, considering how hard most people find it to change their weight, all the yelling doesn't do any good anyway
my two cents

19. Don't ask me, ask your doctor, or any MD |
|
There have been hundreds of studies linking longer life to lower weight in lab animals (like 33% longer). It is a well known fact that extra pounds significantly increase the risk of type II diabetes (the most blatant condition) as well as elevated cholesterol counts and increased risks of some types of cancer. In my opinion, it is a scientifically established fact.
When my blood pressure crept above normal, the first thing the doctor said was "lose 20 pounds. If that doesn't work, we'll try something else." It worked.
But you know -- hey -- it's not my job to convince you, any more than it would be my job to convince you to stop smoking, unless it was to ask you not to smoke around me. As far as I'm concerned, you have the right to smoke if it doesn't get into other peoples' lungs.
So go ask your doctor. If you don't believe her or him, then so be it.

13. Clearly there are dangers at both extreme ends of the weight spectrum -- |
|
but most people are not on either end.
I wouldn't ignore the serious problems that *can* arise from being seriously underweight or seriously overweight, I don't think anyone advocates that.

17. And thin people NEVER, EVER have high blood |
|
pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and such?
EVERY thin person on the face of the earth must just be the picture of absolute health!
That would come as a surprise to my non overweight sisters, two of whom have high blood pressure and take meds for it.
