anti-abortion protest here today....huge turnout of 6 people...
4 women who haven't been fertile in at least 25 years and two elderly men who require no comment. 3 posted on one corner and 3 down about a mile. It is in the nineties in SW Florida. I sure hope they aren't overcome by the passion of it all.

2. The protest was aborted in its first trimester.
No chance of sustaining life on its own.

3. We had one of those a couple weeks ago. 2 people showed up.
Both men. Did the whole "on one knee, reading from the Bible" thing.

12. Did I ever tell you about the elderly couple on our bus of Planned Parenthood supporters?
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 04:06 PM by havocmom
Several buses loaded with supporters and a car caravan heading to Phoenix for a big Pro-Choice march. Very elderly couple in front of us, quietly chatting. A young college coed, walking back to the water closet in the back of the bus, stopped to chat them up.

Young lady gushed how she was so happy people their age were turning out to make a statement about choice, support Planned Parenthood clinic, the whole bit. The elderly lady listened nicely, then replied that they had been attending such marches and rallies for over 50 years and SHE was glad the young woman finally showed up. Her dear old husband just smiled, nodded and chuckled quietly.

It was priceless. And it was a good lessen in history for my, then teen-aged, daughter.

On the other hand, most of the rabid anti-choice bots we went nose to nose with many a Saturday morning, defending the clinic and patients from the rude verbal assaults an physical confrontations, well, my friend, to a one, they were under 40.

I did happen to run into some of them heading for court ordered anger management group therapy when I was leaving my councilor's office one day. Damned near pissed my lace britches, I did!

Oh, and at that march in Phoenix: after we reached the capitol, finished our rally and such, some of us backtracked to do a re-con on the opposition march. There was a building which housed a local TV station not far and the rag-tag, sad group of anti-choice marchers was walking around and around and around and around that building, so to the cameras on the roof recording for the evening news, it looked like a much bigger crowd. It was pathetic, but also taught my young daughter an important lesson about critical evaluation of what is presented on the news.

It was 1988, if I recall.

edited for typo

13. You are so right. That is priceless.
When I lived north of Houston, the crazies would come picket this clinic. All the dead-baby pics and such, just trying to shock people.

A friend of mine was a photog for HPD and we would show up with these huge posters of the most grisly victim shots you can imagine.

Shootings, train/car wrecks, wood-chipper accidents, etc.

Those people would be puking on the sidewalk.

You should know by now that demonstrations do no good.

17. I respect them for protesting peaceably
At least, I assume it was peaceably. If I'm wrong, never mind.

The other day I saw an unassuming little protest across the street from Planned Parenthood--same kind of thing, five or six older people. They were just standing there quietly, with a little sandwich board on the sidewalk next to them saying "Pray to end abortion," and no posters of near-term fetuses or anything like that.

It impressed me somehow. They were exercising their First Amendment rights, they weren't intimidating or frightening anyone (they weren't even visible from Planned Parenthood's front door), they were simply expressing their opinion, as any true American would defend their right to do. They and I disagree on the topic of abortion, but their protest seemed so dignified and quietly heartfelt that it made a far greater impression on me than a loud screamfest of a rally would have done.
