anybody else seen the new hhs psa re: premarital sex?
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 07:14 PM by kagehime
i just saw it for the first time and found it rather bothersome. "success comes to kids who wait to have sex"...what kind of message is this sending? are they telling teens that they won't be successful if they decided to become sexually active? the commercial seems to imply that you can't get an education or find happiness if you engage in sex before marriage...i guess that's where i went wrong :eyes:

abstinence is an important component of to sex education and, to me, it is just as important to make sure teens know it's okay to not have sex and not everyone is doing it. however, there are many more components in the discussion. where are the ads with kids asking for advice on birth control or urging parents to talk to their kids about birth control? what about helping teens (female and male) with self-esteem building so they are less likely to feel pressured into sex? and what about teaching them to not pressure others into having sex?

my parents were very open with me about sex and sexuality (i'm 26) and i can tell you that i did not run out and have sex because they talked to me about using protection when i decided to start being sexually active. nor did i make the decision because i learned about birth control in high school.

eta: what is this saying to glbtq teens? that they have no chance for success in life? (thanks to jack beck and my apologies for not addressing it initially)

1. I heard a disturbing bit on This American Life tonight - it seems some teens are looking to porno
films to learn about sex because they are not getting enough information at home or school. While porn certainly shows them how to have sex (including, according to the teen being interviewed, how to use a condom), it doesn't touch the emotional aspects of intimacy. We are really selling a whole generation a bad bag of goods.

But this psa is just basically propaganda.

2. that is disturbing
we seem to be reverting to the days of learning about sex at the back of the bus or from swiping dad's playboys

on second thought, did we ever really leave those times?

3. well, I'm a child of the 70s
We had an excellent human sexuality course from 5th grade through high school. Information was given at age-appropriate intervals and included discussions on family/married life (such as the stages of pregnancy and how members of the family can pitch in when the mom is pregnant). My mom was also pretty open and today my husband and I have a wonderful sex life. When I hear about what people think is necessary today to have good sex, I'm flabbergasted.

5. And that's what I find to be so sad.
In fact, I have a sister who is 10 years younger and several friends that age. They can barely achieve orgasms and I can't help but think that is a result of the lack of this sort of education by the time they were old enough for it.

14. Abstinence education has deeply damaged our country.
Does the commercial talk about the rise in STDs among these kids?

Doubt it.

16. of course not
as far as they're concerned, kids won't have sex if you tell them not to. if you try to tell them otherwise, they just stick their fingers in their ears and go *lalalalala*

10. Gay people aren't supposed to have sex
They're supposed to remain celibate and pray for forgiveness for having been born.

15. But I thought that was all gay people did.
You'd think they wouldn't have time to, though, between decorating homes and writing Broadway musicals.

21. Obsessing about gay sex is all the RRRW does.
And somehow they think that means we do nothing but have gay sex.

13. Not Only That, But You Should Wait Until After Your Married To Share The Filth !!!
Now we finally know why spouses cannot be compelled to testify against one another.

Too much kink in the closet.

19. i think it proves that they don't care if something is bad for the country or does more harm than
good...they'll keep peddling that shit as long as people keep buying it...as long as they can justify it with their religious beliefs...
