So, I'm at the grocery store... |
|
I've paid for my stuff, and walking out with the young gentleman (read...hormonal teenager) who helped bag my items and is going to load them in my car. We get to my car and he notices the "Obama 08" sticker (I'm not an official Obama supporter...my daughter stuck it on my car when we had our county fair) and he says "What's o-BAAAA-ma?" So I tried explaining who Obama was, and no matter what I said this kid just has this blank look on his face. Finally I blurted "The black guy!" And you could just see the lights come on "Oh yeah! I want him to win!"
Anyway..I just thought it was kind of funny.

but our youth is the future. Currently they are looking at living in a shit country, and having to pay off trillions of dollars of debt. If they are uninformed, we are truly in trouble. Not to mention liking a candidate based on his race is a little troubling IMHO. Maybe I should have said, "It is sad to me, but that is America these days".

I think if you asked 20 people at random, the following questions, you would be stunned at the level of their NON-knowledge:
1. who is the speaker of the house 2. who is the vice president 3. was Carter a democrat or a republican 4. who is the secretary of state 5. how many judges are on the supreme court 6. was Ronald Reagan in the army or air force in WWII 7. how many senators are in the senate 8. who won the Viet Nam war 9. who was Joe McCarthy 10. who is Chris Matthews
BUt if you asked them the following questions, you'd probably get more right answers
1. Why did britney lose custody of her kids 2. What killed Anna Nicole Smith 3. Where is Survivor at this year 4. Who won last year's American Idol 5. Name princess Diana's sons 6. Why did Paris Hilton go to jail 7. What did OJ do recently etc

18. Who is Chris Matthews? |
|
That's the only one of the first group I didn't know off the top of my head.
Second group - I couldn't do better than 50%.

3. Education is the key to Democrats winning elections |
|
The sooner people are informed about what it means to be progressive and liberal, the sooner they start to vote in our favor.
There are so many young people out there who cannot name three elected officials in their district. If we all do our part to show what republicans do (start illegal wars for instance) and what Democrats do (preserve our environment for instance), we would hold every office in the land.

16. Yes, it is attributed to him |

Anecdote: During his 1956 presidential campaign, a woman called out to him, "You have the vote of every thinking person!" Stevenson called back, "That's not enough, madam, we need a majority!" http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Adlai_Stevenson

10. Watch "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?" |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-08-07 12:06 PM by YOY
I can't do it any more...the people on it are so mind blowingly stupid.
This one woman thought the Hundred Year War was Britain versus Spain... She excluded France in her answer because "The don't do wars well..." :eyes:
I ought to go on this show and win some money as I apparently am much smarter than a fifth grader.

14. His answer is kinda funny, since he may turn out to be a liberal... |
|
And I can picture this exchange very clearly. But I agree that it's also kind of sad, since it's pretty much impossible not to have heard of at least Obama and Hillary if you tune into any TV channel, except for The Weather Channel and The Food Network...*sigh*
But the fact that he said that he wanted Obama to win, and not that he was going to vote for him, probably indicates that he's not yet old enough to vote. Actually, he sounds like me at that age... (Though I was hardly hormonal, LOL, but I'm a girl...) Maybe you should have asked him if he was registered.
When I was 18, my mother took me to register to vote (I didn't drive yet). She was really trying to see what I was writing, since she's a die-hard Republican and my parents thought that I was so rebellious as a teenager... though certainly not according to today's standards, LOL. When my mother asked me which party I chose, I told her that I chose the Socialist Workers' Party, and she never asked me anything else...

15. alot of kids are not informed and just don't care |
|
My freshman in college is taking a social science class, and has had quite the eye opening about just how messed up the world truly is, after reading the required class books and group discussion. Sad, but take a look at how things are, alot of young people feel that any reform is out of their hands, big business and politicans make the rules, not the people anymore, unlike the 60's college students who protested etc.

Semi-seriously, the only way the repukes win is by gaining a hammerlock on the dunce vote. If we can make some inroads there, we win! :-)
