$600,000 taxpayers' money being spent to hide "swastika"

"CORONADO, Calif., -- The U.S. Navy has decided to spend as much as $600,000 for landscaping and architectural modifications to obscure the fact that one its building complexes looks like a swastika from the air.

The four L-shaped buildings, constructed in the late 1960s, are part of the amphibious base at Coronado and serve as barracks for Seabees.

From the ground and from inside nearby buildings, the controversial shape cannot be seen. Nor are there any civilian or military landing patterns that provide such a view to airline passengers.

But once people began looking at satellite images from Google Earth, they started commenting about on blogs and websites about how much the buildings resembled the symbol used by the Nazis..."

10. It's actually not one building; it's four L-shaped buildings.
Nobody noticed what they looked like together until the groundbreaking occurred in the 60s; by then, they figured it didn't matter, since people weren't allowed to fly over it anyway.

8. That's been posted about before but what I can't understand
is::: how many Americans are going to fly over this building and be subjected to it every day.. just another attempt to display phony patriotism. That money could be spent on something serious.

12. Shoot, I could obscure that for about $10K
Connect the building with some nice lath and shade cloth structures, put in some subtropical gardens.

13. Always symbols, never substance
Have you ever noticed that? You'd better not fly another nation's flag over ours or have buildings that look like a swastika from the air, but you can stomp all over the Constitution and make it pretty clear that you're a big fan of Hitler's style of government and no one will care.

Besides, the swastika is also a Buddhist and Hindu symbol.

14. You can't even fly a commercial or private plane over it--it's a military building.
No one saw this at all until Google Earth.

The swastika was also used by indigenous North Americans.
