Lynne Cheney should be afraid of Jon Stewart, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND |
|
An observation from ginbarn after watching tonight's Daily Show. Jon did manage to lure Lynne into a couple of zingers, but he did seem much too timid. Your thoughts?

1. I think he is still sensitized about the Tweety interview |
|
He landed funny after that interview. Even Koppel called him on it.

Ripped his new book to pieces. Would not let it go. Just kept calling the idea of living your life like a campaign stupid (to be honest it is stupid). Tweety called it the worst interview he'd ever had.

you should be at least a little polite.

18. He was polite. He told the truth |

and Matthews wasn't having any part of it.
Matthews shouldn't have gone on the show if he wanted to be fellated instead of interviewed.
IMHO, YMMV Julie

You'd think after the "Crossfire" thing, Tweety would realize that Jon doesn't play the game. Or maybe Tucker set him up?

It's good to see you!
BTW, I almost wet myself laughing when Matthews demanded Jon Stewart appear on "Hardball" -- I was hissing at the TV, "You'll get the "Crossfire" treatment!"
Don't the kids today call what happened to Chris Matthews on TDS being "pwned"?
LMAO, Julie still president for life of the PFEB

There will NEVER be a TEB. Or a TTB, either.
I'm good, thanks. Gonna watch The Daily Show again and see if Jon was "acting" afraid. The lead-in to the interview was cutesy.
What's ol' Patrick up to lately?

32. I think Tweety was operating under SOP |
|
Standard Operating Procedure. Book interviews are supposed to just be extended advertisements for the book. They aren't supposed to be critical. If a critic becomes known for being critical of whatever they are reviewing then the circuit is certainly going to bypass them. So most critics suck up to whatever it is they are reviewing. And that is what Tweety was expecting.

31. Matthews is actually proud to have rely on Machiavelli |
|
in writing his book and Stewart called him on this one.
Matthews is used to having his own show where he can say what he wants when he wants, to shout down guests and all of a sudden someone put him on the spot. This was one of Stewart better interviews.

I am suggesting that Jon gets nervous about these sort of things. When Koppel confronted him about it he back peddled pretty quick.

He "acted" the way the Cheney's would want him to while actually putting Mrs. Cheney in her place. The total lack of applause she is used to getting was obviously not there.

There wasn't a single moment where I doubted that Jon had at least a dozen zingers locked and loaded ... and he, having the advantage, showed more compassion for that turdette in 10 minutes than she's shown to anyone her entire life.
She did as well as she could. I think it's a 'Good Thing' that he got her to affirm that GLBT are "just people" and deserving of ALL the rights and privileges of any person. It doesn't hurt to have that said by folks of ALL political postures.
It was challenging to have her on the show ... since, no matter what, he'd take flak. I think he did VERY well. HE was the 'class act' with the home court advantage ... and made points without being a lousy host.

And I have to catch the rerun at 1 am est, as I haven't even watched it yet.
Well said in regards to folks of all political 'ideologies' speaking truth to the thoughtless.
Jon does show his class way more often than I feel I could possibly ever summon for some of the monsters from the "asses of evil" he interviews.
Going to watch now. Please god let Jon imitate the Dick tonight. So Lynn can show she is a great sport, of course.
And she is Lynn "Halliburton" Cheney.

24. TahitiNut, seriously, I don't even think she felt the knife |
|
The silence when she expected applause was stunning. I was also telling my husband that she was probably 30 seconds away from an UGLY meltdown at the end of the interview. She did NOT like being called on her opinions, and Jon's joking questions about her husband's privacy issues obviously incensed her.

26. I was reminded of bull-fighting. |
|
Jon was a matador and he maneuvered her expertly. She's a formidable challenge, able to spew the vapors of Satan's Pit at will. He avoided the horns and didn't get Gored ... and he sliced and diced her with a very sharp wit.
I would never call it a 'tie' (the bull always loses) but I surely think Jon did better than anyone. Remember, she barely has to pick her teeth after having an interviewer for an appetizer. SHe has absolutely no compunction being brutal - much like Barbara Bush. With all that, Jon did precisely what he wanted to do - kept his 'home town' audience's respect and gave the reichbots nothing.

I wasn't sure what to expect from him, really - there was quite a bit of non-verbal communication there, too, with him saying "okay", but dismissively. He was polite, he was nice, and he did make points with both the gay/lesbian point, and Iraq.
How he could stand to even sit near her is beyond me, though!

Jon was cordial and polite. There would have been fisticuffs if she had been on that stage another two minutes, because at the end, she was getting VERY testy.
Don't kid yourselves. Lynne Cheney did not come out ahead, and the administration's little trial balloon ("Let's reach out to the kids with that Jon Stewart. He won't dare say anything snotty to us, would he?") has now failed.

it showed she had a sense of humor. Jon did well by challenging her in certain areas while backing up in others. You could tell that there were times when he wanted to say more than he did but he held back out of respect. She made concessions by coming on the show, and by letting the convsersation be steered to the one area that she and her husband disagree with conservatives knowing full well itll get serious blog time as a result. He honored that concession by going just a little bit easier on her than he would have liked too but i was very happy with the interview. Kind of a subtle waltz around each other the entire time..
Im not a fan of lynne, i dont like where she stands but she gained a little bit of my respect for the way she handled herself

30. In general, Stewart is not a good interviewer |
|
and, with only five minutes on average, he really has to rely on fast give and take.
I have seen him wasting scarce time trying to compose a question. And Cheney was right when, at some point, she asked him what was the question.
It shows the importance of the Daily Show that all the arch conservatives go there to promote their books. We speculate that this is the only show where the viewers actually read books.
