On another DU thread, there is a recruit Gore question on the CBS.com website... so I go vote. I see the comments section, in which a RWNutJob posts this link to Snopes. It's an article on Gore's house using twice the energy of the "average" American home. The story cites dollar figures spent on energy, nothing more. Snopes says it's a "true" story. So I comment...
Comment:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/house.aspAll of your sources are from books written about Bush's house. Have you
even asked anyone who works for Gore about this issue?
There are several things I can point out right off the bat: Gore's house
is used as an office; there are many people working and living there. The
energy used there is "green" energy, which costs a LOT more than regular
varieties. Your article uses the cost factors ONLY in your calculations.
I humbly protest your use of "true" in this article. There is no evidence
that you used sources other than Bush sources. This just isn't right.

So, I IMMEDIATELY get this response:
It's covered in our FAQ at
http://www.snopes.com/info/faq.asp Many of the texts we discuss contain a mixture of truth, falsity,
and exaggeration which cannot be accurately described by a single
"True" or "False" rating. Therefore, an item's status is generally
based upon the single most important aspect of the text under
discussion, which is summarized in the statement made after the
"Claim:" heading at the top of the page. It is important to make
note of the wording of that claim, since that is the statement to
which the status applies.
Additional information about Mr. Gore's house is available in our other
article, clearly linked on the page to which you refer.

To which I reply... Those additional links are saying the same thing. Still noting the dollar amount spent with no regard to the type of energy. And as I said before, there are no comments or explanations from the Gore camp, or anyone else who can validate the extremely expensive use of "green" energy... only the dollar amounts, nothing more.
Who keeps Snopes honest? The answer is: Nobody.
