President Carter: I'd Rather Redo the 2000 Election Than the 1980 Election
President Carter: I'd Rather Redo the 2000 Election Than the 1980 Election

Cenk Uygur: If you had to redo the 1980 election, where Ronald Reagan won, of course up against you, or redo the 2000 election where George Bush defeated Al Gore, which one would you redo?

President Carter: Well knowing what I know now, and knowing the wonderful experiences I've had at the Carter Center in the last 25 years, I would say I would redo the 2000 election. That, you know, I think has had a profoundly adverse effect on our country, and I've had a personal gratifying experience with my wife and many other people at the Carter Center. That in time, that has healed the disappointment that we felt in not getting elected in 1980.

1. I love Carter
And I like Uygur. Cenk has a certain gravitas that would work well on a TV show.

2. I disagree with the ever-humble President
Imagine if Iran/Contra didn't happen and there hadn't been twelve years of Reagan/Bush...

4. he makes the right choice
I think knowing what we now know, the 2000 election might come out differently. On the other hand, knowing what we know now, I still doubt that the result in the 1980 election would be different (although it might have been closer). While the vast majority regard chimpy's presidency as a failure, that is not the case with regard to reagan. (Just so there is no confusion, i think the reagan presidency was a disaster, but I accept that my views on this are in the minority).

5. If Carter won in 1980, history would be fundamentally different today.
Still, if the 2000 election was in favor of Gore, we would be a very strong nation today, no question.

7. Going to have to disagree with President Carter
Reagan is more responsible for moving the country to the right than Bush has been. Bush may have done more overall damage, but without Reagan there would be no Bush.

Also if Carter had been re-elected we would be 27 years ahead of where we are on environmental standards and alternative energy sources.
