I assumed everyone would see this as a tongue-in-cheek thing.

My original post was born of, first, and most gloriously, Gore's winning the Peace Prize, and second, the sniping that is already happening (e.g. on CNN) about it.

And FWIW, I think Al Gore is a truly great man, a far more significant personage than anyone currently on the political scene. I would dearly love to see him as President, and have contributed to the Draft Gore cause.

Al Gore never claimed to have invented the internet. What he said in a 1999 interview was exactly this:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiativein creating the Internet."

And that was an absolutely accurate description of his role in the Internet's development. During the 1980s when he was a senator, Gore sponsored a couple of bills that turned a small government program into "an information super highway," making the internet widely accessible. Even the so-called true father of the internet has said the internet would not have developed as it has without Gore's involvement.

What Gore DID do, was to launch the internet - alongside a lot of other people of course - and promote it, invest in infra structure and so on.
I guess we can say we're pretty happy that this investion exists today. Just imagine where we'd be without it, the media being what they are.
