i mean, everyone knows, second hand smoke is deadLy, so that if someone infringes on your right to breathe cLean air, shouLd they be charged with assauLt and battery? i think attempted homicide, is overdoing it, but simpLe assauLt shouLd be justified.

why shouLd my Lungs be assauLted whiLe waLking down the street, or eating at a drive thru, or sitting in my car?

who's with me?

1. And every time a car passes by as well?

I think I'd much rather breath tobacco smoke than a car's exhaust.

The drivers should face assault charges?

123. second hand smoke is probably more harmful than car exhaust
For a bunch of reasons:

your distance from the exhaust
your closeness to second hand smoke
the anti pollution devices on a car
the many more chemicals in cigarette smoke

We don't have Tobacco alerts.

Tobacco has no serious role in global warming either unlike automobiles.

164. You are mixing everything up
Smog alerts are based on ambient air quality (google "NAAQS" and find out more). Smog alerts are a regional alert for a short time frame (large area, short time span (1 day)

Tobacco does not affect "ambient" air quality on the same scale as the alerts are designed to deal with, thus no alerts coming from the same source.
(tiny area, time span unknown).

That tobacco is not implicated in Global Warming does not make it better.

Did you know that Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) removes Ozone (O3) from the air? That doesn't mean NO2 is not a pollutant --it is.

You need to apply some stepwise reasoning to your point:

1)protect us on a global level in the long term from global warming
2)protect us on a regional level in the short term from unhealthy spikes in Ozone and Particulate pollution.
3)protect us on the small spatial scale in the short term from exposure to unhealthy carcinogens and compounds that cause or exacerbate respiratory problems by dealing with cigarette smoking.

Got it? If you are on board with all 3, I'm happy to go along.

54. One thing I've always found interesting is that in Las Vegas when
people are gambling NO ONE is bothered by smoke. Also have you noticed when you go out for a smoke and find a spot where you're totally alone, the minute you light up there's always somebody who walks right up to you and starts coughing. There's assholes on both sides of this fence.

i stand there flabbergasted with these ANTI smoking friends in their absurdity.

135. Most of the casinos have no smoking rooms, but you hardly ever
see very many people in them. My observation is that people will risk their lives just to keep gambling, and it is just as hard for the gambler to quit and walk away as it is for the smoker to quit. I know you're going to say "but my gambling doesn't bother you" - that's not really the point. I'm talking about quitting bad habits and these habits are both hard to break - I know because I smoke and gamble. ha

188. Hold on, everyone.
The smoke in the casinos _does_ bother me; it's not the ambient smoke but that coming from nearby smokers who just light one cigarette after another.

And why not move? Well, normally you do, but if you've just found a machine that's in a winning-streak cycle you don't want to give up till it starts to turn.

If the casinos would just divide their areas 50-50 between smoking & non-smoking it would be OK.

Instead, we got a backlash with an initiative that forces small bars to decide between serving food and allowing smoking. Dumb! If you're going to serve alcohol OF COURSE food should be available too.

The major casinos are untouched by this new law, of course.

155. Actually I didn't say it was okay to call the cops on secondhand smoke
Unless there's some rule against it.

However, you are right that I've been having some fun on this thread expressing my issues against smoking, some of them are silly

But my feelings against secondhand smoke, while not necessarily asking for police to deal with it, I totally support ordinances that restrict smoking to places where it cannot expose anybody else to it.

If that makes life hard for folks, well, sorry smoking is optional, breathing is not.

180. well, then we better start banning bonfires, cook outs, the burning
of incense, hair spray, and various aerosols because they can trigger asthma attacks. so can strong perfumes and colognes, and CATS!

i know children and adults DIE from asthma attacks (and cigarette smoke is NOT the only thing that triggers an asthma attack)

are all of the above mentioned items on your ban-wagon as well? i doubt it. but if you're so righteous about one aspect (cigarette smoke) then why not the rest?

btw--i found these stats on asthma deaths. i don't know what the death rate is for second hand smoke. do you?

In 2003, 4,055 people died from asthma, or 1.4 per 100,000 people (Figure 7). Among children, asthma deaths are rare. In 2003, 195 children died from asthma, or 0.3 deaths per 100,000 children compared to 1.4 deaths per 100,000 adults. Puerto Ricans were the most likely to die from asthma and had asthma death rate 360% higher than non-Hispanic white people. Non-Hispanic black people had an asthma death rate 200% higher than non-Hispanic white people. Females had an asthma death rate 45% higher than males.

19. Told By Whom?
The CDC study (2000) of which i was a member of the peer review committee, labeled 2nd hand smoke as a Class II irritant.

That means zero evidence of IDLH, and minimal correlation to carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or teratogenicity.

I'm not saying it's not annoying to those around a smoker, but where did you hear that it kills you faster than the things in the OP?

<snip>

In 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) formally listed secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen in The U.S. National Toxicology Program’s 10th Report on Carcinogens. The most recent report can be found at http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/toc11.html on the Internet.

Here is the actual report: http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/toc11.html

11th Report on Carcinogens

Public Health Service
National Toxicology Program
Pursuant to Section 301(b) (4) of the Public Health Service Act as Amended by Section 262, PL 95-622

Tobacco Related Exposures
Introduction
Tobacco contains more than 2,500 chemical constituents, many of
which are known human carcinogens. Chewing tobacco and snuff are
the two main forms of smokeless tobacco used in the United States.
Tobacco smoking produces both mainstream smoke, which is drawn
through the tobacco column and exits through the mouthpiece during
puffing, and sidestream smoke, which is emitted from the smoldering
tobacco between puffs.
Environmental tobacco smoke, smokeless tobacco, and tobacco
smoking were first listed (separately) in the Ninth Report on
Carcinogens (2000). The profiles for these compounds, which are
listed (separately) as known to be a human carcinogen, follow this
introduction.

Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 10:36 AM by ProfessorGAC
You're tedious. My links are that i was involved in the study. You, on the other hand, have posted the same information three times that has nothing to do with what i said.

Give it a rest.

The chemicals on that list are either confirmed or suspected carcinogens, yes.

However, every single one of them has well-established TWA's or TLV's. The concentrations achievable in the average room from cigarette smoke do not even approach the TWA considered to be provably unhealthy. That's why the CDC study said what it said.

You don't know enough science to have your nose this out of joint.

The Professor

On Edit: I'm out. I have no interest in debating such obvious scientific principles with you. I doubt your either capable or willing to get it.

The idiocy is seemingly boundless. I guess folks don't notice that smokers aren't dropping dead within days or weeks of inhaling concentrations immeasurably greater and more frequent than the life-threatening sidestream smoke in some outdoor venue.

17. While I oppose the smoking idea
I must admit I support your idea for two reasons:

1) Because with the exception of one, maybe two songs, his music is crap

2) It's impossible to hum any of his music without it bordering on cruel and inhumane punishment.

well...okay 3. Because Nugent is a f**king knob.

I believe there are laws against defiling someone's drinking water and also their food source. The human being needs three things to sustain life. Food, water, and air. Why should there be laws against polluting food and water but not air?

Edited on Sat Oct-13-07 07:23 AM by Toots
Secondhand smoke is..It contains carcinigens that have been proved beyond any doubt to cause sickness and death do your farts do that? I guess to you, people dieing from extreme pain and discomfort is quite all right as long as you can continue to pollute their air just so you can satisfy your addiction. Why can't you just poison your own air in your own house, why do you insist you must poison everyone else's air as well? Why?? And I am the bad person for wanting it to end..... Americans are the most arrogant people on earth..

192. You call Americans arrogant!!
Edited on Sat Oct-13-07 11:33 AM by spokane
I'll replace that with IGNORANT!!! did not want to get into a debate.....what the hell.......here is one ARROGANT American educating one IGNORANT American, Here are examples of gases that kills, since you're ignorant I'll excuse you this once.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are chemicals used in great quantities in industry, for refrigeration and air conditioning, and in consumer products. CFCs, when released into the air, rise into the stratosphere (a layer of atmosphere high above the Earth). In the stratosphere, CFCs take part in chemical reactions that result in reduction of the stratospheric ozone layer, which protects the Earth's surface from the sun. Reducing the release of CFC emissions and eliminating the production and use of ozone-destroying chemicals is very important to the Earth's stratosphere.

Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) are chemicals that cause serious health and environmental effects. Health effects include cancer, birth defects, nervous system problems, and death due to massive accidental releases, such as the disaster that occurred at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India.

Hazardous air pollutants are released by sources such as chemical plants, dry cleaners, printing plants, and motor vehicles including cars, trucks, buses, planes.

I don't see anything about second hand smoking kills. So take your "no good two bit info and shove it somewhere else"

by the way, where the hell did you get carcinigens from? let me help you.....did you mean carcinogens, because if you do then here are more info on carcinogens....

What Is a Carcinogen?

Cancer is caused by abnormalities in a cell’s DNA (its genetic "blueprint"). These may be inherited from parents, or they may be caused by outside exposures to the body such as chemicals, radiation, or even infectious agents. Substances that can cause changes that can lead to cancer are called carcinogens. Some carcinogens do not act on DNA directly, but lead to cancer in other ways, such as causing cells to divide at a faster rate, which could increase the chances that DNA changes will occur.

Carcinogens do not cause cancer in every case, all the time. Substances classified as carcinogens may have different levels of cancer-causing potential. Some may cause cancer only after prolonged, high levels of exposure. And for any particular person, the risk of developing cancer depends on many factors, including the length and intensity of exposure to the carcinogen and the person’s genetic makeup.

Now do you see anything that say Carcinogens is the cause of second hand smoking? because I don't....I hope this puts the argument to rest.

Now have a pleasant day!!!

Edit 1: I'm a non smoker

Edit 2: I'm still a non smoker

25. Depends on your definition of "near"
I smoke and try not to smoke near others, always standing apart when outdoors and upwind from non-smokers who may be in the area. But if you are across the street or maybe 25 feet or more away from me and I am upwind of you then go fly a kite.

I was out with my wife recently and she had a cigarette in her hand when someone walking in the other direction on the sidewalk began hacking and coughing and waving her hand in front of her face as though my wife had assaulted her with smoke. The only problem is that her cigarette wasn't lit. So there are people who just like to bitch and moan and it sounds to me like you are one of them.

Oh and don't forget to call the cops on your neighbor whose Bar B cue grill uses charcoal or when they're burning leaves and please please don't forget to call the cops on the little old lady that uses too much perfume because she doesn't like to bathe everyday, when she's standing next to you on the elevator.

45. if you're at the drive thru, you're in your car..
why would someone be standing next to the window smoking? And you never did address why you couldn't politely ask someone if they mind putting it out. But seriously, I don't there that there are too many instances where people are cued up smoking forcing non smokers to drop dead from the smell. Maybe in a line to buy tickets for a concert and chances are you're going to smell worse things than cigarettes, but certainly not while you're standing in line waiting to pay for a purchase. Why call the police? if you do happen to cross a smokers path and you're forced to inhale as you're walking by, just be a guy and ask them to put it out.

Jesus, I swear people are too self-righteous and hysterical.

If you ever want to know just what's behind the whole anti-smoking jihad, you can find it in his statement "eating at a drive thru." Willing to have other people arrested for smoking in the name of health, but eating at a drive through?

It's not about health. It's about satisfying yourself by controlling other people. It's about the sense of self-fulfillment someone gets when they can use police and government power against other people. THAT's what the anti-smoking movement is about.

You know, the ones who walk in a miasma of "good" odors and trigger my (non-smoker) asthma attacks?

I think the OP might have to negotiate the smoking on a case-by-case basis until we as a society get a little less hypocritical about it.

You're not going to do anything with the real knuckleheads, but you might find others surprisingly accommodating to a polite request to move it farther away. Certainly preferable to harassing an addict about his/her addiction.

158. Uh, NO!
I am not with you. Assault and battery? Do you know the meaning of "battery?" (sniffa, you usually make more sense than this...)

battery n. the actual intentional striking of someone, with intent to harm, or in a "rude and insolent manner" even if the injury is slight. Negligent or careless unintentional contact is not battery no matter how great the harm. Battery is a crime and also the basis for a lawsuit as a civil wrong if there is damage. It is often coupled with "assault" (which does not require actual touching) in "assault and battery."

When you think that the police have nothing better to do than come to your sidewalk and take someone to jail for smoking... Well, okay.

Although cigarette smoking is annoying and prolonged exposure can cause many health related problems and even death, walking past someone who is smoking is not a situation where one would need to call the cops.

We can make the U.S. the next Singapore - caning for gum chewing! Caning for homosexuals! Caning for smokers!

Who's with me?

170. Well lets try this.
I light a smoke and blow a puff in your face. Then i seriously lay an ass whipping on you. When i finish the former i'll give you a choice of which you'd like too have again. I doubt you'd choose the ass kicking.

Or since you said something along the lines of "their trying to kill me". Maybe i could blow smoke at you first, then give you a 10 second running start before i start taking pot shots at you with a rifle. Again after the former i'd give you a choice which action we could repeat. I'm sure the smoke would not look so bad at this point either.

(the above is on a humorous note)

I don't smoke, but smokers don't bother me. They have already been driven mostly outdoors, and into their homes and cars. If i can put up with all the rest of the toxic crap i have to smell daily a couple stray smokers are no big deal.

200. You have GOT to be kidding...
you ARE kidding, right?

I have heard some pretty far-out proposals from antismoking fundamentalist groups, but this one has to be sarcasm.

Smoke isn't good for you, but it's not VX, either. The studies that have shown harm from secondhand smoke have all had one common denominator--long-term indoor exposure. You have a lot more to worry about from the sun exposure you get from walking down the sidewalk than you do from catching the scent of burning tobacco, and the threat from the sun is overrated.

FWIW, cigarette smoke gives me headaches, and it causes my wife asthma attacks. But there's no way I'd support that level of authoritarianism.
