Will Hillary Clinton call for GORE to run for President? How about other candidates?
Are the candidates for President "party loyalists" who would call on GORE to run if they think it would ensure victory in 2008?

2. No. None of the candidates will. They've invested too much in their own campaigns.
They're hoping the statement by his spokesperson that his odds of running were "remote" is true.

3. To suggest that means that Hillary actually cares about the direction of this country.
Therefore, I sincerely doubt it.

I can't see any of them saying it, unless they were dropping out.

17. If they all say it, we'll know Gore isn't running for sure, I suspect.

4. Why would they? They've been working their TAILS off for months
and certainly believe they could carry the party banner just as well as Gore.

5. Who are they working so hard for? Themselves or the People?
Is this really that egocentric? If a candidate thinks GORE would be a better candidate and a better President .... they should.

11. They have the right to NOT step aside--silly to think that somehow
they are less "entitled" or worthy to run than Gore. They all have something to offer. I believe that Obama is running for the good of our country, for one.

21. Excellent point.
I understand that politics is ALWAYS partially an ego trip, but wouldn't it be nice to expect some altruism from our Democratic leaders?

23. Indeed. What will they say if asked directly about a Gore candidacy?
The answers would indicate a lot about their characters, and their concerns about the country.

13. Now there's an idea. I'll support any candidate that asks GORE to run!
Finally, I have a way to decide who to support.

If they are wise enough to want Gore for Prez.... they might be a good Prez... makes sense to me.

7. Why do you think people run for president?
Most run, because they believe they can win. If they believe they can win, why would they invite more competition?

As far as "ensure victory", most head-to-head polls show Clinton, Obama, and Edwards all doing well against the Republicans. Again, if they feel they can win, why would they need another candidate to enter the race?

14. It is not a matter of "need." It is a question that goes to what is best for the US and the World!

15. In whose opinion?
Your opinion is that Al Gore would be best for the US and the world.

What do you suppose Hillary Clinton's opinion is?

Or Barack Obama's opinion?

Or John Edwards' opinion?

Or Dennis Kucinich's opinion?

People don't run for president because they think that someone else will be better for the US and the world.

16. I suspect that all four you mention would consider Gore a great candidate.
What their reactions to this idea would be might be a great indication of how great a candidate they each are.

I do not assume these people have no sense of altruism just because they are candidates.

Myself, I'm just asking the questions, not venturing my opinion. I'm just one voter, not a king maker in Dem circles.

18. I think that you're intentionally missing the point.
A politician does not run for president if he or she does not believe that he or she would make the best president, regardless of the competition.

Expecting the other candidates to just bow down to the greatness that is Al Gore is, frankly, a bizarre expectation. They all knew that it was possible that Mr. Gore would run, and they all ran anyway, because each of them believes that he or she is the best candidate.

19. Are you saying Bush ran because he thought he would make the best President?
I do not believe I can read the minds of all these people. I have no certainty about how they think.

I once worked in a Presidential campaign, and once was a personal aide to a major candidate. My impression is that things are far more complex and nuanced, not so black and white.

12. Overheard phone call from a certain candidate to Rupert Murdoch...
"I want 'Does he deserve this prize' on every website and media outlet you own. And make sure you run the Private Jet/Large Electric Bill stories....wait, I have another call coming in..."

<click>

"Why, yes, I couldn't be more thrilled by Gore's win. All the best.."

<click>

"Rupert?? How fast can you get those out??"
