Poll question: If Gore had been in the senate - how do you think he would have voted in the Iraq War Resolution?
Just out of curiosity.

Disclaimer - I do like Gore. A lot. But I'm a moderate, and I think people have shifted Gore a little further left in their minds than he actually is.

1. He's always been an outspoken advocate against the Iraq war.
That should be your answer.

2. I really have no idea...
but that is the beauty of Gore worship, you can attribute any politically positive quality onto him that you want, because he's not in politics at the moment.

4. Being a political moderate does not mean that one lacks
conviction or principles.

5. I agree 100%
But it does mean that those convictions or principles are necessarily different than those of the further left.

7. He would've almost certainly voted AGAINST it
If I remember correctly, he was one of the VERY few public figures to openly denounce the Iraq invasion/occupation (before/after?) it began, not to mention slam the Bush (mis-)Administration for its pre-9/11 failures. I remember too that he took a lot of heat for his comments, however, of course, he was right and has long since been vindicated. He was anti-war before anti-war was cool, so to speak.

10. There's no way to know
Gore has changed a lot from his days in Congress and his time as Vice-President. If he'd never left politics, he might not have taken the philosophical journey behind those changes. How did he vote on Gulf War #1?

14. He voted for the 1st Gulf war, but see my post #12 for what he said and did in 2002
There is no reason on earth to think that he would have voted for the IWR. He has always said that he opposed it, beginning in September 2002 and continuing through today.

11. Yes, people have shifted him left, because his statements have
indicated that he's moved left.

12. Gore is on record in 2002 saying he would have voted against it
He gave his first major speech against the war was given on Sept. 23, 2002 - - several weeks before the vote was taken. In that speech he specifically said that Congress should vote against the IWR.

On 11/24/02 - - after the IWR vote and before the invasion - - Gore was asked by the press for the first time whether he would have voted for the IWR.

Gore bashes Bush's record
Possible prelude to candidacy
by Marc Sandalow, Washington Bureau Chief

(snip)

For the first time, Gore -- who was one of the few Democratic senators to vote in support of the Gulf War in 1991 -- said he would have voted against authorizing the White House to use force against Saddam Hussein had he been a member of Congress last month.
