1. Enjoy it before * gets you all transfered to the infantry or gets
your ships sunk in the Straits of Hormuz.

2. Happy B-Day and a salute to the Navy, from this Air Force wife, who
had her first baby at Charleston Naval Hospital and received excellent care from the personnel there.

4. My latest memory of Charleston
was 89 (I believe) we had to do extensive work after Hurricane Hugo. A fine Naval Base for sure. I'm so happy we live about 60 miles from Keesler AFB; its coming back strong after Katrina. One of my best buddies is an AirForce CMSGT I served with in a joint operation in Saudi back in the 90's. Great teammate to have.

8. Glad to hear about Keesler--we lived in Gulfport for a time when
my husband was going through a training school there. Sadly, Charleston Naval Base is mostly a memory, from what I understand.

10. Charleston was loathed by a lot of military families.
The navy housing - Hunley Park - out in the middle of nowhere up Dorchester Rd. and under the flight path of C5s headed to Vietnam.

The public schools were for black kids and military kids only and were third from the worst in the country. I used textbooks in the 7th and 8th grades there my sister had used in the 5th and 6th grades in CT.

Then there was the pulp mill smell....

15. It has gotten a lot better.

I'm not sure about the school situation, since when I went through I didn't have children, but base housing was definately nice. However the base itself has changed a lot over the year. The most public view of the base is the nuke school, as large numbers of young baby nukes constantly roam the local best buy (and other areas) in search of electronic gear to stock in their barracks rooms. I only went to best buy in uniform once, thank god phase one only lasts four weeks.

on edit: I should note that while me and my wife quite enjoyed housing, it is in process of being privatized, or is already privatized. A bad move in my opinion since they will also allow low income tenants into the neighborhood whom I suspect will destroy the area.

12. I just realized that all the guys my mom and my aunts married
were in the Navy!

It only took me nearly 39 years to figure out I owe my life to Fleet Week!

:woohoo:

13. Fleet Week in San Fran in 67!!
Carnal Debauchery to the Max. Last year the local houses at an Australian port had to close down because the fleet was in and the girls were wore out. I guess thats not necessarily something to be proud of.

16. While I am not pleased about the Navy, thanks.
I suspect I owe them a lot due to my training as a nuclear mechanic. The future will tell the tale however.

To think I picked my job as a way to avoid a possible draft!

24. Happy bday.
An uncle of mine was on the Carrier USS Saratoga. I thought I might even join for a while when I was a kid.
