1. He has some pretty serious mental health issues
That much is blazingly apparent.

Whether he'll get the much needed treatment that he needs IN THIS COUNTRY is much less a certainty.

5. My point being that his actions are horrendous
But, frankly emotion shouldn't blind one from seeing the bigger picture:

That a sane person wouldn't do what he did.

There's much more to his story than the brutal destruction of innocent life.

17. inner city school.
I hear about cats being thrown out windows, cats being burned, cats being hit and kicked...

I hear about dogs too... mostly pit bulls- "my daddy hits him with a tire to make him mean. It's funny"

15. Our experience is that beaten kids beat up on animals.
But sometimes it's just ignorance. We saw some kids behind our store pulling a cat's tail and laughing. We told them to stop because it hurt the cat and to come around to the front of the store and we'd show them how to hold a cat. They did and we taught them how to hold kittens. The triumph was when they brought in their friends and taught them what they'd just learned.

8. another serial killer in the making
Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 11:49 PM by orleans
"Defense attorney G.W. Parker said the allegations made against Campbell were out of character for him and said he thought after talking to Campbell's parents that being charged with eight counts of animal cruelty is just at odds with how he's been brought up"

and let's guess how he's been brought up

"Court papers say while a student at Stratford High School, Campbell was a member of the R.O.T.C."

hum...surly there is something else...?

11. The last ones to recognize there's a problem are the fundie parents!
"Gee that's not how he's been raised!" is always the comment.

Years ago, someone stole my hubby's car right out of our driveway. It turned out the kid was only 14, and the cops caaught him driving up to the school bus stop to show off to his friends! When they talked to his parents, his mother said "He couldn't have done that, because I go to church every day!" Ordinarily I wouldn't have pressed charges and just accepted payment for the car from the parents, but I decided I'd be doing the kid a favor by making him go through the juvie court system. It was sure apparent to me that Mom wasn't teaching him much!

13. i hate to be so stereotyping--but i admit that "fundie parents" was
exactly what i was thinking. (glad you pressed charges with the 14year old btw...for the same reason you stated.)

14. Lock him up and throw away the key.
This is a thrill serial killer working his way up and we have no cure for what ails him.

16. It's good to know you can practice pyschology at such a distance.
Sick people deserve help. This child is sick. Where the sickness came from needs to be sought out and cured, and all those that are afflicted by it given the assistance they need to live a decent normal life. No one can claim to assess a persons mental health state simply by reading a newspaper article, while a lock up might be required to protect society from him, it should be in a sanitarium with trained mental health professionals working to help him overcome his difficulties functioning in society.
