IS there a Hillary Connection to the John Edwards Affair Smear In National Enquirer? LINK

"The Clintonite who owns National Enquirer"

by Ben Smith

The political world has been holding its nose for the last twenty-four hours while peering at the weekly tabloid National Enquirer, which published a story yesterday alleging that presidential candidate John Edwards had an extra-marital affair.

"The story is false," Edwards told reporters in South Carolina today, according to a reporter who was there.

What the tabloid's readers, in politics and out, may not know is that a key owner of the Enquirer is a prominent New York investment banker and one of Hillary Clinton's key backers, Roger Altman. Altman was an official in the first Clinton administration, and his name is often mentioned as a possible Clinton Treasury Secretary."

Interesting Comment: "...Hillary is connected to fugitive fundraiser Norman Hsu, her main strategist is connected to the folks at Blackwater, and her 'friend' is connected to a tabloid that "suddenly" had a disgusting front page story about one of her main rivals."

3. As far as we know she was involved in neither the moon landing nor twin towers, however....
.... since Edwards was called upon to address the obviously false allegation, I would expect Hillary likewise to be issuing a statement on these two items you raised any time now.

BTW the OP was a link to a published article.

However, there is no denying that one of her close supporters is a partial owner of the National Enquirer.

4. HRC is not my favorite. But she has no reason to fear JE.
Much more likely is that real live conservatives have a need to turn things nasty.

12. You Nailed It
They want to run against Hillary because they do so well against her:

Riding a crest in her political appeal, Senator Hillary Clinton now leads former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani 48% to 41%. She also claims a stunning double-digit lead of 52% to 37% over former Senator Fred Thompson. Two weeks ago, Clinton led Giuliani by five and Thompson by eight.

17. Forget the polls for a minute, and focus on their hate. Hate motivates and that is what they are
looking at. They believe, rightly or wrongly, that they can utilize that to their advantage. During the republican debates, it is Hillary they attack and demonize the most out of all the Democratic candidates. That is the only point I was making, not who stands the best chance against them, it is who they want to run against

7. Wow. A Clinton Smear Story About an Edwards Smear Story.
Hmmmm. Maybe Ben Smith is working for Obama. Then we'd have a third-order smear, a smear of a smear of a smear. Like xeroxing a mirror. Weird.

8. How big are Altman's holdings?
How connected is he to the paper itself? What kind of person is he? Until you know something about this, it's just a tenuous connection at best.

20. Finally a voice of sanity
Also, did he have any knowledge of the content of the tabloid - that seems to write stories like these as its main purpose to exist. I assume that if someone had a stack of them - disgusting as they are - there are likely some less than positive Bill, Hillary or even Chelsea stories.

Is it really news that the National Enquirer prints lies? It also makes no sense. Edwards is running third, about 25 points behind HRC - killing his candacy would likely accomplish what will likely not happen otherwise - make it more of a two way race - or elevate one of the third tier. The latter would be interesting. I have heard some people - in real life - reluctantly pick Hillary because they think neither Edwards or Obama have the experience and no one else has a chance. Any of the third tier would be an experienced non-Hillary choice. Knocking out Edwards would HURT Hillary -0 especially if her fingerprints showed.

In 2004, it was reputed to be other Democrats who spread the intern lie about Kerry. They did it though as Kerry was winning primary after primary. There this despicable act, that hurt a talented young woman, who did not have an affair with the Senator, could have helped one of the lower candidates if Kerry did not handle it well.
