Edited on Sat Oct-13-07 01:48 PM by chimpsrsmarter
i do, my bil is a republican but now claims "I've always really been a libertarian" so i said no you really haven't, you've self identified as a republican and voted for them for the 21 years i've known you.

4. same thing as my bil, how are you different from republicans now?
he had nothing, "Small government" um yeah, ok. He lives in a community in Florida with many retired military folk like himself and he claims his friends are also libertarians. "You mean republicans that are ashamed?" i love giving him a hard time because he is such a tool.

5. Pretty funny slip, really.

I call my father-in-law 'Fil'. He's a Repub through and through, but his non-political qualities overcome that and I really like him.

But get this: Someone once ventured that maybe they should vote for Mitt Romney and he said "Never - he's too liberal." I just chuckled to myself.

He and I do not discuss politics, ergo we like each other.

7. thats hilarious. Normally i avoid discussing anything political with my BIL
but the day after the 2004 election he called my house and said "I'm from the GW Bush campaign and i'd like to thank you for your support" which he thought was just so funny so when i get the chance i always bust his balls.

8. When a republican says he is a Libertarian you automatically know
...he has used pot, have had gay sex and/or cheated on their wives, secretly supports a woman's right to decide for herself although openly proclaim to be pro-life and pretty much wants to be unaccountable for any behaviors they have engaged in for which they may now be singled out on. I know some such republicans for years openly voted straight republican, who are now professing their libertarianism and that appears to have been their general MO.

10. i doubt my bil has ever lit up (he should) and i know he's anti choice.
i do believe there are indeed true libertarians i just don't believe that the many no self identifying libertarians are the real deal.

13. Now that is far more the case and perhaps we will see a return
...to the Whig Party or perhaps a new Progressive Conservative Party or maybe a reactionary movement back to the old Tory Party ideas.

15. Reminds me of a neighbor who, when asked if he was a libertarian, said, "no, I work at Sears"
I inferred he thought I'd asked him if he worked at a library. :eyes:

12. My father, who knew John Schmitz, always called himself a libertarian
Even though he was the farthest thing from a libertarian.

To quote my old man (quoting John Schmitz ... whose son works for Dubya, which is where Doofus
probably got the line), "I don't mind tyranny, as long as I'm the tyrant."

17. You know who John Schmitz's daughter is, right?
She's notorious child molesting teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau who went to jail for a few years for screwing one of her pupils after having a kid by him and being told by a court to stay away from him. They are now happily (?) married and have two kids I think.

Every time I talk to my brother about this we share a sentimental moment reminiscing about a teacher we both had in HS who would sit on the edge of her desk, and deliberately (we think) flash a glimpse of her unmentionables to get all us teenage boys all hot and bothered. Jesus we were stupid.

20. Yup. I went to school with her sister. The whole family was wacko
Mary Kay was supposedly molested by her brother -- I always wondered if it was the one who works for Dubya. It would be consistent.

18. Yep, know about a dozen, half of which I'm related to! Guess being lifelong declared GOP loving
Republicans is so not cool, that all of the sudden the mantra is "But I really have always been a Libertarian"....Yeah, right... :eyes: My Dad the lifelong "Reagan Republican" thinks Libertarian now because he believes in no taxes and keeping Gov't small (as in non-existent). Guess that's what is so appealing to him.....

19. libertarian means ignorant racist blow hard doesn't it?
Yes, an old college buddy has drifted from republican to libertarian. a couple of years ago he told me he thought the PNAC crew were the way and the light. He sheepishly told me voted for W. Twice. Last week he's "always been more of a libertarian." He also pestered me for 1000th time to buy a gun for the " coming race war" since I live in Oakland, Ca or "ground zero" as he calls it.

23. funny you should say this...
Isn't that what all the right-wing trolls around here claim to be -- "libertarian"?

So transparent.

Of course, some of them are better at it than others.
