With the GOP offering a slate of fools, does Bloomberg get in?
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 09:06 PM by Old Crusoe
And do we need to worry about him?

The guy used to be a Democrat. He's a vast improvement as NYC's mayor to his predecessor.

New York City mayors tend to be fluid in their party affiliations. Giuliani, Bloomberg, and Lindsay all had ties to both Democratic and Republican establishments at one or another time in their careers as mayor.

I picture Bloomberg waking up early -- he seems to be more vigorous than a lot of public officials -- and picking up the TIMES and reading that people like Tom Tancredo and Mitt Romney and the late John McCain are all seeking the presidential nomination of the GOP.

Evidently he's officially an Independent now. I don't believe fundraising would be a problem.

And he doesn't have anything else to do.

Should we be worried that he takes a look at the whole field and says, "Hell, I can drop 100 mil into a race for president" ?

And again, should we be worried about it?

1. I remember hearing him saying that he was not interested in running.
He seemed sincere at the time.

2. He did sound like he meant it. My thought was though, that as the
autumn rolls on and with no one better than Giuliani and Romney in the race, does someone as well-funded as Bloomberg decide to jump in as an independent.

I'm not sure he would. But having little else to do, I wonder if he might just take the plunge.

3. Good question. I've seen a few polls with him included, and he usually does break 10%.
That being said, I don't think most people know who he is yet, so if he jumped into the race, that could change.

I think he'd be a formidable opponent, especially compared to the current Republican field of a half dozen Bush clones, a half dozen Reagan clones, and Ron Paul.

8. Yes. Agree with you that Bloomberg would have to work a bit at name
recognition.

But your other point on the weak field I think is closer to the point -- and the one thing that might motivate him to jump in the race -- besides just needing a project in a couple of months.

The GOP field in 08 is unbelievably pathetic. Bloomberg's personal sense of management and executive bearing must be offended -- perhaps to the point where he'd say, "Ok, if this is the field of fools who wants to be president, I'll by god do it."

7. Don't apologize for your spelling. It's a lot bedder than myn.
Yes -- I worry about cheatin' but they had a big chance to cheat in Ohio in 06 with Ken Blackwell overseeing the elections AND running for governor, and we kicked his corrupt fanny somethin' fierce.

The Pukes are in trouble for 08 and I think most of them know it. Kay Bailey bailed within the last 12 hours and is heading back home to run for governor.

My hope is that Karen Hughes challenges her for the job and the two of them beat the holy crap out of each other.

That's not an especially refined political sentiment, but it's a sincere one.

9. I'd buy tickets to that one.
There is evidence that in 2006 they did manage to deny us a real working majority via vote shaving, for one thing. Mark Crispin Miller referred me to an article, "Landslide Denied" about that election.

But I hope you're right. My sense is that most Americans couldn't wait to dump the Thuggery in 2004. They're four more years' worth of mad.
