The anti-universal health crowd - just when you think you don't need help - you need help
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 05:12 PM by devilgrrl
I'm reacting to the caller that's on with Sam Seder. He claims he won't need any help should he suffer a catastrophic illness. He makes 100k a year - he's careful you see, you don't get it!!!!

Well, I think he's full of shit.

3. He needs to take a long look at how expensive an extended medical emergency could cost
Much less if he exhausts his 'lifetime benefit' and can't be insured by anyone else for existing conditions.

$100k a year isn't going to make a dent in that situation.

Oh well, the "i got mine, y'all are on your own" syndrome strikes again.

6. I know two guys like that
who think they are in the über-elite because they make a similar amount. I think that is one of the problems - I'm not saying these guys are not rich, because they are, but... they are not as above the hoi polloi as they'd like to imagine they are.

One catastrophe or even a change in the economy could ruin them, then see them run for help. Of course, when they're on top it's because of their own accomplisments only, and when they fall, it's always someone else's fault.

4. So did I. And even w/ health Insurance and all that, a bout w/ cancer will
simply wipe your ass out financially. You can't work for a few years and you end up on disability and the house goes away and optons become more and more limited. No complaints here, I'm still sucking wind, but that asshat needs a reality check.

5. He makes $100 K NOW. He won't be pulling in that when he is unable to work, will he?
Then let's see how he decides what gets paid for... food, housing, utilities or medical expenses.

7. Ignorance is bliss
for him, until something happens. That 100k won't pay for the drugs he needs if he is diagnosed with cancer or is hopitalized for any length of time. Meanwhile if he has insurance he'll lose that too. So typically conservative to not see a situation unless it has happened to them or theirs.

8. I tried to call in but couldn't get through to tell Sam this.
As I said on another thread, he doesn't know what a chronic catastrophic disease costs. My husband had end state renal disease that cost an average of $2,500 a month on dialysis on Medicare. That didn't include out of the pocket expenses for things the dialysis didn't cover, like other medication. As a private patient it would have cost more. If that man's wife came down with kidney disease and needed a transplant, would he tell her to go die in the woods? I doubt it. Also, what if she qualified for a transplant? Imagine what that costs out of pocket.

In the years I went to the dialysis clinic with my husband, the majority of the patients were young or middle-aged many because of juvenile diabetes. These were people who hadn't had a chance to save their money for a rainy day. That guy was such an idiot and I wanted to tell Sam.

9. 100k a year can be worse than nothing.
After the insurance companies shake you off because you can't work and pay the premiums, then you may end up further down shit creek than someone who had a small income when they got sick or were in an accident. Nobody expects anything from a guy who makes minimum wage and rents a room in a bad neighborhood, and unless you are an illegal alien, there are some programs that will cover your medical care.

If you have (or had!) money you get to pick and choose between disability, bankruptcy, and/or the overwhelming and never ending medical bills for life plan.

100k is nothing when you fall out with something "catastrophic" and there's quite a bit catastrophe that gets heaped upon people who are "careful." No matter how careful you are, a drunk driver, a bump on the sidewalk, a cute kid sneezing in your face, or a cosmic ray can still take you down.

10. I loved the caller...
...who, when confronted with the fact that, under Medicare, only $0.03 of every dollar goes to bureaucracy, while, under private insurance companies, that number jumps to $0.25 - $0.35, and then asked which is more efficient, simply wouldn't answer, but kept on saying "it's a matter of opinion," or "it's hard to say." :banghead:

It made me think of the story in Genesis where God promises Abraham that he will spare Sodom if "ten righteous men" can be found there. I think something of the converse applies here -- if, in a nation of 300 million, there can be three voters as mind-bogglingly stupid as the three that called in quick succession yesterday, there is no hope for that country. Where are we going, and how did we get in this handbasket?

11. Healthcare is the great equalizer
I've been acquainted with quite of few of these types who have suffered either a catastrophic illness or injury.
When they have to start selling off the stuff, you'd be surprised at how humble they get.
By the time their families have moved into shithole rent houses because they have maxed out their policies and bank accounts and ruined their credit ratings, they're downright liberal in their thinking on universal healthcare.
Too bad it ever had to get to that.

13. I'm getting kinda sick of people referring to the anti this and that crowd
It's an automatic put down of a group that you disagree with. Hardly the way to start a conversation.

16. Except that anti universal healthcare IS nonsensical
The only sensible and WISE thing to do is remove the profit motive from our healthcare system and do away with the medical insurance industry as we know it.

18. It's cool. Just trying to play it off with humor.
I guess I was having a crummy day too. Hormones. And last night's "Anti-Hillary crowd" and "Anti-Obama crowd" threads got to me.

That doesn't mean I should have taken it out on you. I'm sorry too.

No worries.
