5. Hmm. So now you're passing out trophys?
Well that's certainly interesting, I must say.

Not that I care about that sort of thing. And don't get me wrong, I'm very happy for sfexpat. Jealousy plays no part in the matter, as my joy for her win has fully occupied my every waking moment.

I hope she finds a nice spot to put her lovely new trophy.

6. Oh. sfexy. I didn't see you there.
By the way, congratulations on being the first to K&R the thread. So marvelous. Really. So marvelous. How do you manage it?

Really.

I couldn't be happier if I had that gleaming trophy all for myself. Not that those things have any meaning. They just sit there. Gleaming and golden.

Again, I'm so happy for you my dear. *kiss, kiss*

17. "The End of America," Naomi Wolf--Fabulous!
This was a fabulous program, and probably a great book, although I have not read it yet. It appears to be a combination history lesson-warning about current conditions, maybe along the lines of Thom Hartmann, etc., and was written as much to answer the ignorance of history, and lack of civics education, shown by "liberals," as to answer the current belligerance and distortion of "conservatives." Much of the current threat is due to a breakdown generally, of knowledge of the Constitution, our history and what the Founders really wanted--checks and balances, restrictions of power, balance of power, public debate--and what it is that is really being threatened. With most people seemingly more concerned with the trivial crap on TV, etc., than paying real attention to political and civic life, thinking that "nothing really bad will ever happen here," Naomi Wolf decided that she needed to write this book. What really sealed it, although she thought it was a huge exaggeration at the time, was when a woman whose parents survived the Holocaust started saying recently, "They did this in Germany, They did this in Germany," about the abuses and "law changes," warrantless wiretaps, targeted slander campaigns and use of torture of the Bush Administration.

She made a study of history and compiled a list of ten things that mark the rise and finally consolidation of all power of despots from all eras of history, noting how similar the pattern is--from the use and exploitation of an external threat, to attacking critics as "traitors," to shutting down the press and extending the restrictions on dissent speech, to targetting individuals, there is a progression, and it is always the same. It is vary hard to fight, because, contrary to common belief, the progression is not slow and orderly, easy to comprehend the increasing danger and abuse, but actually muted and easy to ignore or characterize as something "normal," then very quickly, the change is there, and it is too late because laws, etc., have been removed, and there is no way to fight or stop things now. This is a tricky topic, because it is so easy to sound like an idiot panicking over any little thing and exagerrating it or making false historical comparisons that are not really accurate--like pretending that Americans are "like Nazis." Wolf handled the accusation very well.

Once, this creepy bastard who was interviewing her actually said that she was "crying wolf against everybody that we used to call 'The Man,' " and that "We all agree that we don't torture." Thank God--she did not fold, and crawl! "No, we can't agree on that at all," that it was "a soundbite, that we don't torture," and that "You know so much better than that" and that she would not "waste time rebutting Administration sound bites." It was so easy, and so complete! An answer! Later, this shit happened again, and again she answered it. When discussing the way critics of the Administration have been labelled "traitors" or "aiding the terrorists," etc., this interviewer, who by the way, helped foist the "Patriot" Act on us, laughed, "Is this what people talk about, in Martha's Vinyard?" This slap-in-the-face, ("rich, useless limosine-liberals," etc.), so typical of Republicans for so long, although stunning as it came out of nowhere, nonetheless did not go unanswered: "I WISH I were in Martha's Vinyard," that no, she did not live there, and that she has been hearing these concerns and fears, all over the country, from "ordinary Americans, who DON'T vacation in Martha's Vinyard." It was wonderful to hear every smear, every insinuation, answered.

There was a lot of historical reference, to World War II and the Nazis and fascists, to the Espionage Act of 1917, to other eras with similar patterns of increasing "threats of terror," punitive measures against formerly allowed criticism (with reference to the current Move On situation, with a censure from Congress), and although, again, there has to be a real concern about conflating eras and situations, and although she assured the interviewer that she does not expect crematoriums, etc., that there has still been a profound change by this Administration, to things we never would have allowed to happen before, with secret prisons for "enemy combatants," and increasing use of the term, "enemy combatant," spying, and the alarming spread of Blackwater from the battlefield to "policing" cities in the U.S., already at New Orleans, etc. There were brief but good parts of the discussion about the also lawless Supreme Court, and shockingly compliant Congress.

It ended with Naomi Wolf's opinion that the basis of this is corporate/economic, the "military-industrial complex" with diminishing "markets" as the real threats fade and the domestic economy here fails. It is now called, by the Trilateral Commission and quoted by Wolf, the "security-industrial complex." This also explains the explosion of surveillance cameras in all areas of life now, needed or not, Blackwater and its multiplying contracts, and all the rest. This promises to be a great book I think, a great blend of historical perspective and sounding-the-alarm; there were also parts of the program where Wolf described the "tipping point" phenomenon, and how little it would actually take, for example with arresting or silencing journalists, before the flow of public information and the safeguard that represents, would be crippled. It is a huge topic.
