Blair gets early backing in race to be EU's first president
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/914897.html

Tony Blair, the Mideast envoy for the Quartet, got early backing from the British and French leaders at the end of an EU summit on Friday to become the European Union's first-ever full-time president, a role meant to boost the EU's profile on the world stage.

With an agreement on the EU governing treaty in the bag, the leaders were
quick to toss Blair's hat into the ring of candidates for the prestigious post of chairing the EU.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said his predecessor would be a great
candidate to become EU boss.

The reform treaty needs to be ratified by all member nations before a
president could take office, likely in 2009.

"Tony Blair would be a great candidate for any significant international job, Brown told reporters at the end of the EU summit. As you know the work that he is doing in the Middle East (as a peace envoy) is something that is of huge international importance."

Another Blair admirer, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, also hoisted him as a bona fide candidate.

1. This guy is the ultimate bad penny.
He just keeps coming back. It's like one of those slasher flicks: just when you think the killer's dead, he comes back and starts his shit all over again.

Fuck off, Tony! You've done more than enough damage already.

4. That's how the EU works

The likes of Neil Kinnock and Peter Mandleson go over there after their Westminster careers have gone tits-up. The EU has a reputation for being where washed out political grandees go in search of a nice cushy job.

The exceptions to the rule appear to be the 2 men running for the leadership of Britain's 3rd party, the Liberal Democrats. Both Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne used to be MEP's before entering parliament.

6. But there's a lot of difference between the European Commision and the Parliament
The EC is the 'jobs for the boys' place. MEPs get elected - even if it is a list system.

8. No

It's still only some people's theory that Kelly was murdered; and the worst that Blair is being accused of is covering it up after the event, not ordering it!

Of course, he *did*, through his policies, order the murder of lots of Iraqis; and told plenty of lies about it; and that is quite enough for me not to want the loathesome little toad around.

EU president is a cushy, but not powerful, occupation. Though personally I think that the part of Europe most suited to Tony's unique contributions is The Hague!
