The US has expressed its concern over reports that China and Iran have signed big power plant agreements with the Iraqi government.
"We encourage foreign investment in Iraq, but obviously we are concerned about negative influence from Iran in the country," White House spokeswoman, Dana Perino said.
Iraq agreed Thursday to award contracts worth $1.1 billion to Iranian and Chinese companies for them to build two power plants.
According to the Iraqi electricity minister, Karim Wahid, the Iranian project are to be carried out in Sadr City.
Wahid added that Iran had also agreed to provide cheap electricity from its own power grid to southern Iraq, and to build a large power plant essentially free of charge in an area between the two southern Shiite holy cities of Karbala and Najaf.
