Rising seas threaten 21 mega-cities
:scared: :scared:

By The Associated Press 2 hours, 12 minutes ago

BANGKOK, Thailand - Cities around the world are facing the danger of rising seas and other disasters related to climate change.

Of the 33 cities predicted to have at least 8 million people by 2015, at least 21 are highly vulnerable, says the Worldwatch Institute.

They include Dhaka, Bangladesh; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Shanghai and Tianjin in China; Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt; Mumbai and Kolkata in India; Jakarta, Indonesia; Tokyo and Osaka-Kobe in Japan; Lagos, Nigeria; Karachi, Pakistan; Bangkok, Thailand, and New York and Los Angeles in the United States, according to studies by the United Nations and others.

1. Quite apart from London
It would be tragic to lose the 100 Club - a jazz club underneath Oxford St which opened in 1942. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_Club

2. Is it acceptable to bring up population control or is that considered racist?
Even though, of course, they've mentioned just about every continent here.
Really, under the human race gets population under control, I don't know where the hell everyone is going once the water rises.

7. The problem is the population, granted. The Bigger problem however,
Edited on Sat Oct-20-07 08:00 PM by TalkingDog
is that living near water is preferable siting.

It's human nature. Check out population densities. No matter the country, they always center around access to water. If I'm not mistaken (and I might be) I think the last figure I heard was that worldwide over 80% of the population lives in coastal regions. Not on the coast necessarily, but most likely within 50 to 100 miles of it.

Now for the even BIGGER problem
As the water rises, they will begin to move up and inland. More bodies = Less land = less resources and less acreage to plant food. People and animals will clash even more than they are now. The distrubed climate, along with proximity of both humans and wildlife will spread diseases much more quickly.

It's a self-solving problem. But a very, very protracted and ugly solution.

4. Don't worry about that. Worry about peak oil. We will run out of oil way before that happens.
Google -peak oil- and do some reading.

5. Here in Amurrica, The Waters Will NOT Rise
Here in Amurrica the oceans' waters will NOT rise and the decent, G*d-fearing folks will be able to go about their business without worrying about the seas washing over their coastal cities. When the oceans' waters start to rise, hundreds of thousands of ditto-heads will park their SUVs at beach-side parking lots and stroll into the raging surf with their arms outstretched shouting "Clinton's Fault!" "Clinton's Fault!" "Clinton's Fault!" and "Monica!" Monica!" And lo, the power of the Lord will be made manifest. Upon hearing their cries, the Almighty will raise His hand, and the waters will recede and stay receded, the oil fields of the lower 48 states and ANWR will miraculously replenish themselves, provided, of course, that American voters make sure that the GOP stays in control of the White House and as the majority party in the House of Representatives and the Senate. :sarcasm:

part the oceans so that we can continue to import lead coated nothings from foreigners. I'm gonna be sick.

6. What about Honolulu?
Parts of that city are just a few feet above high tide. The North Shore is not much better in places.
