Dallas transit bus evacuated after bomb threat (now called an "apparent misunderstanding")
Bizarre local story..coupled with huge amounts of black smoke billowing above downtown's skyline on my way home from work tonight (a motor home near downtown had caught fire right when the bus was evacuated) made it seem from a distance that all of downtown Dallas was on fire. News radio had to keep repeating that the smoke had nothing to do with the "threat".

Dallas police found nothing aboard a bus evacuated Friday afternoon following a report of a suspicious package.

<snip>
A canine sniffed the bus, accompanied by his handler. And after a member of the bomb squad went into the vehicle. But nothing was removed from the bus.

Authorities say an unidentified man is in custody after he told the bus driver he had placed an explosive device inside. The driver rang a silent alarm and the passengers of the bus evacuated.

Some three blocks in two different directions were cordoned off in a normally busy downtown.

A 35-year-old man was taken into police custody after an apparent misunderstanding on a DART bus Friday afternoon, police said.

Initial reports indicated the man boarded the bus and said he had placed a bomb on board. After an investigation by the Dallas police, it was determined that the man was on the bus talking loudly about his bomb knowledge.

When the driver approached the man and asked if he had a bomb on board, the man replied, 'No,' while messing with wires and a circuit board, NBC 5 reported.

"Once our bomb squad arrived we did take a look at the bus. We had a bomb technician go on the bus and look at the wires and did determine that they were mechanical wires from the bus itself," said Lt. Vernon Hale of the Dallas Police Department.
