1. Apparently all the sex offenders are living in the town next door to us
But since we share the same geographical region it probably comes to the same thing.

Our various crimes have taken an uptick -- except for auto thefts, which for some reason declined by half -- but we are still below the national average. I was startled by the graph that showed a significant number of toxic waste sites until I recalled all the electronics firms we now have and used to have. No superfund sites, but still, that's kind of icky.

It's interesting to see our town laid out like that. Knowing what I know about my own place, I wouldn't want to actually pick a new place to live based on only that info, though it might be helpful if I was going to have to go anyway.

2. About 25 murders per 100k. It's Louisiana violence is part of the culture.

3. My town is at 1/2 the national crime rate.
We have had three murders since 2000. Not bad for a population of 33,852.

4. Why is it automatically 'bad'?
People pay their debt to society, and all the citizens freak out.
People shouldn't buy locks because if an armed ex-con master-burglar/rapist sneaks into your house, locks are only going to piss him off once he finally gets in. At least 90% of the time the criminal defeats all security, then gets the guns.

8. When you say 'automatically bad' I asume you mean sex offenders
....uh, given recidivism rates, yeah - it's bad. Sexual offenders are notoriously hard to 'fix'.

There are serious risks with WELL over 50% of them.

Forget the security systems etc.... a couple of good well trained dogs are quite sufficient.

12. I'm saying that once offenders have paid their debt to society,
they need to be given a chance again. The judgementalism of contemporary capitalistic Western culture leaves those on the fringes unable to compete or participate.

5. We live in a small funky county area between these two cities
http://www.city-data.com/city/Los-Altos-California.html

There are furors every 3-5 5 years over which town to join or establish our own city.

There is one sex offender in our area. His mother is a rabid RWer (she seems senile of late).... he lives at home. He is not one of the really bad ones.

10. Here in N Ca it rains lightly all winter and NO rain in the summer
Live Oaks and other deep rooted trees and shrubs do well in the summer.. everything else dies unless it is artificially watered.
