NY1
Anti-war protesters hit the streets Saturday with the message "bring the troops home."
Organizers say tens of thousands of people marched from Union Square to Foley Square in Manhattan this afternoon to demand an end to the war in Iraq, and to call on the Bush administration to bring the troops safely home.
"We stepped into a country that we have no business being in at this point and we need to get out," said one protester. "We have lost too many of our people and they have lost so much."
"New Yorkers are against it. The youth is against it. If this government is really for the people, then they need to hear the people and the people want this war to end," said another protester.
"Congress has supported the war. The Democrats have voted for the war in Iraq, voted for the Patriot Act, voted for these imperialist war measures," said a third. "And what we say is, we want to mobilize workers' power as opposed to begging Congress to stop a war."
Organized by United for Peace and Justice, the march was one of eleven large events throughout the nation, involving moments of silence and demonstrations.
"People in 11 regional centers and several dozen other locations around the country are also marching today also demanding 'end this war, bring the troops home now,'" said Leslie Cagan of United for Peace and Justice. "We need money in our own communities not in a war that never should have happened."
Saturday marked the five-year anniversary of the Senate vote that authorized President George W. Bush to go to war.
The day-long event was capped with a peace fair in Foley Square.
