Civil Rights Pioneer Rosa Parks Dead At 92
Civil Rights Pioneer Rosa Parks Dead At 92
Daughter Of Detroit Made Home Here In 1957

ClickOnDetroit
7:23 am EDT October 26, 2005

Civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks died Monday at her residence in Detroit. She was 92. Parks died at her residence in the Riverfront Apartments of natural causes Monday with friends and family by her side, Local 4 reported.

Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955 landed her in jail and sparked a bus boycott that is considered the start of the modern civil rights movement. The bus is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. On Tuesday, the bus was draped in black and visitors streamed in to see the historic icon.

Parks was born Feb. 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Ala. She moved to Detroit in 1957 with her husband, Raymond, and found refuge from death threats and a job working for Rep. John Conyers' (D-Mich.) office as an aide from 1965 until retiring in 1988. Raymond Parks died in 1977.

In 1975, the city honored the legend who made her home in Detroit. It renamed 12th Street, which is now known as Rosa Parks Boulevard. No specific funeral arrangements have been announced.

19. Thanks for posting that youtube.
I had not heard that song in a long while (someone took my CD :(). My kids learned that song when they were really little and we would sing it on the way to school. My way of teaching them history I guess, it worked. Anyway, thanks. I have always liked that.

6. K&R for Rosa Parks. I stand on the shoulders of people like her
What can you say about such a corageous human being without a selfish bone in their body?

Rosa Parks and so many others in the civil rights movement, made so many sacrifices, all in the hope that people in my generation wouldn't be called upon to make those same sacrificies.

What is the gift that my generation will leave for the next?

13. I read a kid's book to my son about Rosa Parks
a couple ofmonths ago. A lovely book, but I was particularly surprised to find that she had gone to work for John Conyers. I already had respect for him and knew he had been around a while but never realized the connction.

Rest in well-deserved peace Mrs. Parks.

I'll celebrate your life by reading your biography with my boy again tomorrow.

36. MonkeyFunk, remember too -- people may not receive their news for all sorts of reasons --
Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 02:30 PM by Radio_Lady
They may just not be as "tuned in" as you think you are. Sometimes people miss a bunch of news items just because they are on vacation and aren't listening to or watching the media. Also, not everyone is interested in the news YOU might be interested in.

Be kind to them, MoneyFunk, please. You really do not need to be this critical or put it in a snarky way.

Also, perhaps the OP might have said:

"Remember two years ago?" -- and then gone into the post.

ON EDIT: I've posted a clarification for those people who erroneously think it is a recent event.

but I want to say for the record that I never addressed you "last night". You referred to a thread two nights earlier that, in fact, had nothing to do with you, beyond the fact that you think movie reviews in the Lounge are your bailiwick alone.

But even if that thread referred to you (which it didn't) it wasn't "last night". It was two nights earlier, and your nasty PM to me doesn't change the fact that Friday night isn't Saturday night.

55. I have to keep reminding myself that Nixon's dead...
I have to keep reminding myself that Nixon's dead. I'm not being facetious-- it's simply that I grew up in a world in which he was always an omnipotent figure backstage. Friends and I can begin discussing him and without realization, we unconsciously imply to ourselves and others that he is, in fact dead. It happened recently, but it's hazy and I couldn't tell you why.

Ms. Parks in much the same way-- she redefined large portions of American Life and has always been a presence in my world. When I initially read the subject of the OP, my thought was, "Oh no! When did this happen...?" before my awareness kicked in.

That being said, I make it a point to cut people a little slack when a point or two is forgotten-- there's a lot in this world to remember and I've yet to meet someone who can remember it all.

42. not to diminish her actions, but you do know her story don't you?
the seamstress too tired to move after a hard day at work is only part of the story. She was an activist and part time secretary for the NAACP. Black activists wanted to boycott the buses but needed a "defendant" to rally around. They were looking for the perfect person who refused to give up her seat (they didn't consider a man, the record is they were looking for a woman). Several women had done the same thing as Roas that year but for one reason or another, would not make a good point person (one young woman was pregnant but not married, one was not mentally stable) finally Rosa refused. Having read a few historical accounts of the strike, if she was not put up to it, she probably "conspired" to be the one.

And MLK was the "face" of the strike because he was new in town. There was, as so often is the case, some politics involved in and among the leaders of the black churches, several of them wanted to be the leader, the spokesperson. Which had made them ineffective at organization. MLK had gotten a new gig in town as pastor and wasn't yet aligned with one side or the other yet. They were all able to agree on him as the compromise mostly because no one knew him.

It would have come, just maybe in a different way, had it not been for so many odd little quirks of history.

47. This is from 2005. Please take note of that. A memorable anniversary, but. . . .
I was born and raised in Detroit, and had the honor to meet Mrs. Parks on a number of occasions. I share the respect here, but please note that this is an anniversary, not a news headline. To think otherwise is to diminish her historic life.

It has been expressed elsewhere on this thread, but I think this would not be so strongly recommended if the headline had been written to reflect this as an anniversary.
