2. Unless it's Cat 3 or above hurricanes
are tolerable. The problem here is not hurricane winds - it's flooding for days as this system is moving very slowly. There's flooding in the Virgin islands, Puerto Rico, DR, Haiti and we are seriously worried about rain since Jamaica is already saturated. No doubt I'll be getting an unplanned day off tomorrow.

3. Please explain
"Hope some reaches the mainland"

Are you in a drought? Are you in Florida?

4. Mainland USA
We don't need another drop. Steve Lyons says life threatening floods are the major worry here. South Florida may have flooding rain and Guantanamo Bay Cuba is under the kosh. Shouldn't be more than a tropical storm or at worst a Cat1, but rain is the problem here.

5. agree on that it needs to go to the Mid-atlantic region
despite recent rains here (about 3 inches in three days) we are still VERY dry in the midatlantic and could use tropical rains..although the Atlanta, Georgia area is in more desperate need.,
Most of our regions fall rains are usually from downgraded tropical systems...we do NEED them to some extent

6. Southeastern states are nearing a water war.
Alabama and Florida are threatening to sue Georgia for reducing the flow of water from Georgia's lakes and rivers. Athens, GA has a 90 day supply of water and is trying to keep as much as they can. Alabama says that GA's decision will cause one state to suffer more. We are in a severe drought that could cause an all out water crisis in 2008. We need the water.

9. We need a slow-moving, drenching tropical system to move in over Apalachicola, FL ..
And to then move slowly (but not slow enough to cause major flooding) up the Apalachicola Basin, up the Chattahoochee River (Alabama-Georgia line), over Atlanta, maybe stall for a couple of days over Lake Lanier, then out over NE Georgia, Upstate SC, and western NC. Dispense with the winds; just bring RAIN!

Lake Lanier, Atlanta's primary water source.

11. Don't lose hope
It's amazing how quickly the waters can rise again. In Austin, our biggest lake, Lake Travis, was down something like 10-20 feet. Many many docks and structures were on dry land that shouldn't have been. We had a very wet summer and it's back to normal, even releasing water through the floodgates.

Pray for rain! It will come.

8. Thanks -should be mostly water
We'll be OK but the poor folks on the coast and in the hills can't take another drop of water. I can't imagine the landslides in Haiti. There will be serious loss of life with this slow moving mostly rain event.
Any word out of Puerto Rico yet?

15. We really need the rain. This tracking map doesn't look good
for any drought relief.
