I've got a nasty book dilemma |
|
I have a local history book my grandmother gave me about a dozen years ago, that's part of the problem. The biggest problem is it's not so much history as it is opinion. Opinion of a newtie loving rethuglican that gets really ugly at times. There is some valuable verifiable history and some very interesting photos and that's what makes it so troubling, there is just enough validity if one can sort through the muck to make it worth keeping. As it is I feel that I'm doing nothing more than quarantining a nasty nasty vile piece of filth, I don't want it to escape into the wild and contaminate anyone. So here is the dilemma. I can't bring myself to harm a book. This is something my deceased Grandmother gave me. There is some valid history and interesting photos.
On the other hand, like I said it's more opinion and opinion diametrically opposed to mine and sanity for that matter. What to do with this thing. Eventually it's going to escape my custody and find it's way into the wild, maybe into the wrong hands. There are a few hundred if these floating around, so it's not the only copy, I just regard it with contempt and can't bring myself to do anything other than to keep it in custody. Help me out please.

WRITE A RESPONDING BOOK. From your knowledge, experience, perspective, and borrow those parts that work.

2. I'm also loathe to damage a book, but... |
|
Maybe a Sharpie to the rescue, do what the gubment would do and redact that nasty stuff, just Sharpie it right out of view.
Not sure I could do what I'm advising, but maybe I could if the words were offensive enough to me. Maybe.

After the initial reading it's been quarantined on my shelves, it has about a half inch of dust on it.

7. Ugly history is still history. |

antifaschits is right, though. Even if you just include an addendum with the truth.

Take out a yellow highlighter, and highlight the parts that are bullshit. Make notes in the margin as to why it is bullshit. Then when it gets passed on, it will be a thing of historical value, as well as a thing of use.
Just a thought.

Thank you Willy. I hadn't thought past anything but how repulsive and wrong it is.

11. My grandmother, who'd come from money, hated FDR |
|
and kept scrapbooks full of anti FDR newspaper articles, editorials and cartoons. It's every bit as poisonous as the revisionist crap floating around right now.
I wouldn't think of destroying this stuff. History has proven that FDR chose a wise course that led to the greatest period of economic justice and stability this country has ever known.
Those scrapbooks are proof that he didn't have an easy time of it, that there was vehement opposition every step of the way, and that he had to fight for justice for the people of this country.
That, to me, is a valuable lesson for generations to come. Nothing comes easy and there will always be people who are stubbornly wrongheaded, even in the face of the success of things they are opposed to.
Keep the book. Write a preface, if you must, but keep it. Remember, you can't kill an idea by trying to suppress it, not even really, really bad ideas.

14. I'm going to do willy's idea |
|
I'm going to go through this again and highlite the areas that I know to be false and put in the correct information. I may make an addendum and attach it to the back cover. Thanks for sharing that about your grandmother, hopefully all of these ideas will be refuted someday as well.
