Video Puts Canadian Part of Falls in US

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Oh, Canada! The USA is closer than ever.

The Bush administration appears to have annexed a major Canadian landmark as part of a slick new campaign to promote U.S. tourism and welcome foreign visitors to America.

A Disney-produced promotional video released last week by the departments of State and Homeland Security highlights majestic American landscapes, from New England's colorful fall foliage and the Grand Canyon to the Rocky Mountains and Hawaii's pounding surf.

The video portrays Canada's Horseshoe falls as a natural American wonder.
Ineptness, or foreshadowing?

It's easy for me to laugh at these thugs mistakes, but lately I find that it's queasily frightened laughter.

1. When Koch was mayor of NYC ...

... New Jersey put out tourist info claiming the Statue of Liberty was a New Jersey landmark.

Said Koch: "Nah! The Lady is a New Yorker. If she wanted to belong to Jersey, she would have jumped off her pedestal and swum over there years ago."

Foreshadowing? I think not ...

3. Three points.

1: I was unaware that Disney was composed of "thugs."
2. It's showing the Niagara Falls, which is indeed half-American. I'm not really offended that they showed the Canadian side.
3. Slightly misleading stock footage ≠ Anschluss. Please keep the hysteria down.

If you are viewing the falls from the American side, your view is of the Canadian side - and vice versa.

10. Three replies.

1) The thugs I was referring to are in the Bush administration. The video was commissioned by the State Department, Karen Hughes specifically, and is on official government web sites.

Although having known some ex-employees of Disney, "thugs" was one of the nicer descriptions they applied to their bosses.

2) The video shows Horseshoe Falls. According to Wiki: "The Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls, is a waterfall on the Niagara River, located entirely on the Canadian side of the border with the United States."

You are not offended, perhaps, because you are not a Canadian?

3) A shot of a Canadian waterfall, viewed from a location inside Canada, promoted as one of the wonderful things you'll see IN the United States, I'd say that's completely, not slightly, misleading.

Yes, that doesn't equal a Canadian anschluss. That's why there is a question mark after the words "Canadian Anschluss" in the title of the post.

This is a bulletin board on the internet. Hysteria is appropriate and expected.

You'll note, if you read carefully, that I mentioned that this was a mistake and not a real attempt to annex Horseshoe Falls

11. There's no narration in the video.

It's just shot after shot of people and places in the United States, except for Horseshoe Falls.

I was using "America", like the author of the article, to mean "The United States". I've heard people do that before.
