What will congress do if Bush attacks Iran?
Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 06:02 PM by truckin
I was just at a local fundraiser with my freshman congressman. He has done a good job in his 9 months in office and I have a lot of respect for him. I asked him if congress had any plan to stop Bush from attacking Iran. He responded by saying how can they stop Bush if he illegally starts a war with Iran? I then asked him if the Democrats in congress had any plan if Bush does bomb Iran. He said he didn't think Bush was crazy enough to do this and that he does not hear a drumbeat towards war in the House.

Now maybe there is a plan and he was not going to tell me. Or maybe there is a plan within committees that he is not a part of. But I got the scary feeling that congress is just hoping that Bush does not attack Iran and they are not prepared to take any action if he does. This scares the hell out of me and makes me wonder what we should do. It seems to me that we are heading toward a disasterous war with Iran and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

and it will go nowhere. If the msm covers it at all, they will likely make him look like some sort of loony tune.

10. I wanted to ask him why impeachmeant proceedings weren't
happenning but I never got the chance. DK may not get far but I'll give him credit if he at least tries. We need congress members to do the right thing and not worry about the political implications.

4. If bush attacks Iran after congress nixes it can't they
arrest them. Just sent the secret service in to pick them up. After all it would be treason.

7. I don't see any plan where congrees nixed it. All I see is a
resolution in the Senate that classifies the Iranian National Guard as terrorists which gives Bush more authority to start war with Iran.

Please don't think that I'm snarking at you -- I don't know how long you've been around DU, but the Congressional Democrats' "Secret Plan" has been running joke around here since at least 2002, I think. Just so you know.

I really do appreciate your OP, btw. Thank you for posting about your personal encounter, it's one my favorite kinds of DU post!

16. It would have been far more reassuring
Your congressman sounds like a good guy, who gave a disturbingly honest answer to your question. It would have been far more reassuring if he could have, would have said that he's prepared to work with his colleagues to stop or blunt any further headlong rushes by this criminal administration into imperialism. I mean, he doesn't have to tell you the details, but to at least say that yes, that's a possibility they're considering and discussing.

As for the direct answer to the question, I'm guessing that Congress will consider a strong condemnation, then collapse and wind up apologizing for thinking of opposing the latest war crime.

17. Exactly. I wasn't looking for any details just some assurance
that they are considering some kind of action. The congressman seems very sincere and I do trust him but I was obviously disappointed in his response.

Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 08:45 PM by distantearlywarning
"Georgie, you are a naughty, naughty boy! If you attack Iran again, we'll be forced to let you know how disappointed we are in you!"

Then they will give him $50 million dollars.

35. That's so easy. Give Bush a $50,000,000,000 appropriation bill for combat operations in Iran.
I mean, you just gotta support the troops when they're ordered into battle. :sarcasm:
