Preparing for winter...aka weatherproofing.
We're hunkering down for winter finally here in central Iowa. Its windy and gray...typical November weather. The temperatures are approaching seasonal finally, but its been a dry November so far. The sky is the gunmetal gray of a snow sky. We've changed the batteries in the thermostat and checked its programming. Turned off the outside spigot and put hoses away. Changed the filter in the furnace. Removed the window air conditioner. And we just finished one of the cheapest weatherproofing tasks of the fall. We caulked the windows. No, not the big ticket 40 year caulking to seal on the outside. We caulked the windows that we have had open to catch the summer breezes on the inside with a silicone caulk. It's the same sort of material you have to peel off the back of your new bank card when the send it to you pasted on a letter in the mail. They sell it at the hardware store. It's a clear substance and peels off easily in the spring, but goes a long way in sealing those drafty cracks around the window sill.

Now, it's time to settle back with a toddy.

1. I removed my window AC unit today also.
It's sitting on my bed. :( I'm not going to do a damn thing to insulate
this place though, as we're moving, hopefully in the next two weeks.

It's cold here in MA. 35 right now but it was 27 early this morning.
Gray skies, windy and a little rain. Some snow west of me in Orange, MA.

I'll join you with a refreshment in a little while!

I'm not looking forward to these days at all! .

2. silicone caulk does not peel off like the "material you have to peel off the back of your bank card"
Good stuff, but not removeable. It does remain flexible, unlike the old stuff, but would need to be removed with a sharp blade.

4. It may not be silicone but DAP makes a removable caulk for sealing windows etc.

5. We got a brand called Seasonall...I may be wrong about the
substance name (hubby threw the container away), but this does peel off easily. We've used it for several years now and it helps to cut down drafts around windows.

3. We put in the window fans, opened up all the windows
and turned off the AC...

But, you wanted to discuss weatherproofing! We do that in March-April, when the hot season is coming back around.

6. isn't that expensive and troublesome, silicone?
why not use an acrylic latex caulk, that runs like 2 bucks a tube, and has no smell. or an inert material, like sponge rubber strips? howzabout interior mounted storm windows?

7. My goof. It's not silicon, but another substance and it literally
costs us a couple of dollars a year for one tube.

8. Ah, winter
I have my solar pool heater cleaned and tuned up, the tomatoes have set their fruit, overseeding at the golf course is done and I'm picking up my re-gripped clubs tomorrow. Oh, and the Canadians are back in full force and spending money like sailors on shore leave, and I ain't talking geese!
