Arrests made at Veterans Day event (xpost from MA)
Arrests made at Veterans Day event
November 11, 2007

BOSTON --Several anti-war veterans were arrested Sunday when they protested their exclusion from a Veterans Day event outside Boston City Hall.

The Boston chapter of a group called Veterans for Peace estimated that 15 of its members and supporters were arrested when they refused to move away from the podium at an event sponsored by the American Legion. Boston Police said several arrests were made, but did not have an exact number.

"We're opposed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, we're opposed to the planned invasion of Iran," said Winston Warfield, a Vietnam War veteran and member of the group. "A lot of veterans view us as traitors."

Warfield said the American Legion rejected their request to have a speaker at the event on City Hall Plaza. An after-hours call to the American Legion office in Boston was not immediately returned Sunday.

"From our point of view, it's a public affair," Warfield said, despite U.S. Supreme Court precedent that allows private groups that obtain proper permits to choose who can participate in their events.

4. Were you harrassed?
Cuffed and stuffed, or just led away?

Did you have to make bail?

9. But a paddywagon, I thought, was specifically fitted to hold people.

On edit: I answer my own question. Wikipedia says that 'paddy' may be slang for the Irish (short for Patrick)
but also, that 'paddy' could refer to the padding on the sides of these wagons which was there to prevent injury to prisoners. See for yourself

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddywagon

Wikipedia is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Very cool.

19.  I'm very familiar with Wikipedia and have great doubts about
much of the information that is found there.

"Paddywagon" was coined as the term for the vehicles to haul the Irish drunks.

Arrests Made At Veterans Day Event

City Hall Ceremony Sparks Controversy

POSTED: 5:33 pm EST November 11, 2007

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/14567233/detail.html

The American Legion are so pro war, they make me sick and what is really bizarre, to me, is I got an e-mail about a fund raiser from an anti-war group asking me to attend but it was to benefit the AL and their drive to send care packages to soldiers in Iraq. I wrote them back and declined the invite and also stated the reasons why and I haven't heard from them since. I'm not going to support ANY American Legion causes!! I already do help AMVETS send care packages every month and they are neutral on the war.

I mean, why in hell would I help a group that fights the anti war movement and why would these people who attended my anti war rally support them? Makes no sense to me!

I can't find any pictures.

18. Don't disrupt the worship services
The High Church of Redemptive Violence is holding its services on the streets of your town. Do not disrupt those services with heresies such as "peace" or "non-violence" and especially anything that questions the awesome power of violence to redeem any situation. Yes, this is happening on taxpayer-funded roads, and yes you are a taxpayer, too. What of it? Your opinion doesn't conform to public dogma, so you will be shut out of the assembly.

Is that really so hard to understand?
