Kanye's Mama Dies After Plastic Surgery
by Josh Grossberg
Mon, 12 Nov 2007 02:25:52 PM PST

Donda West, the former Chicago State University English professor who left higher education to guide her son to a Grammy-winning hip-hop career, died Saturday evening in Los Angeles.

She was 58.

According to Patricia West, a spokeswoman for Donda West, the cause of death was complications stemming from a "cosmetic procedure."

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed Monday the death is under investigation, but initial indications are that she succumbed to complications from surgery. Lieutenant Fred Corral, the watch commander, declined to elaborate, only saying West was pronounced dead at Centinela Marina Hospital in Marina del Rey at 8:20 p.m. Saturday.

4. Or mother?
What a sad commentary that a woman of nearly sixty is insecure and needs/wants to change herself; specifically, her appearance.

After a certain amount of living, one should really start feeling comfortable in one's own skin.

This is a beautiful woman to me, it's sad that she felt she needed to change herself:

6. It's terribly sad. I hadn't heard how she died, but the tv earlier was
saying that she was a very successful english professor in Chicago, and I think she was a department head. Such a waste, and how very sad. Assuming it was an elective procedure.

8. You may want to slow down -
I heard on the radio this morning that she was having a breast reduction. Don't know if its true but no woman has this surgery unless they really need it - it is a pretty gruesome procedure.

10. Well, if that is true, that's not a "cosmetic procedure"
That's a procedure to take the weight off your lower aching back, neck and shoulders.

I know someone who had it done. She had to fight like hell, but it was classified as a "necessary" operation to ease her pain.

The press is reporting this as cosmetic. If they're wrong, they should be soundly beaten.

15. It was a tummy tuck and breast reduction, apparently.
Dr. Jan Adams told celebrity Web site TMZ that he performed a tummy tuck and breast reduction on Donda West, but that she might have died from a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or massive vomiting.

Adams said West consulted with him over a period of four months, often changing her mind about the surgery, according to the article posted late Monday.

It was unclear when or where Adams performed the surgery. Attempts to leave a message at a listed office number in Beverly Hills were not successful. A call to a home listing in Laguna Beach was not answered.....A plastic surgeon, Dr. Andre Aboolian of Beverly Hills, said Monday that West had approached him months ago about having cosmetic surgery. He said he never performed the procedure, telling her he was worried about a pre-existing condition she had.

Aboolian told West two weeks ago that she needed to get a medical clearance before he would agree to do the surgery, said his publicist, Jo-Ann Geffen. He never heard back from her, Geffen said.

Aboolian was concerned about a condition West had that may cause a heart attack during surgery, said Geffen, declining to elaborate because of patient privacy rights.

19. The "Mama" may be a reference to his song, "Hey Mama," about his mother
from the song:

(Hey Mama), I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you
Let me tell you what I'm about to do, (Hey Mama)
I know I act a fool but, I promise you I'm goin back to school
I appreciate what you allowed for me
I just want you to be proud of me (Hey Mama)

13. So unnecessary.. people... plastic surgery is REAL surgery
and yes.. you CAN die from it..

The really sad thing is that people who loved her didn't care whether she had "perky" boobs or lipo-ed thighs, or a taut chin..

People are supposed to age, and it's so much better to accept that gravity exists..and to come to terms wth your aging body, than to risk losing your life so that strangers "wonder how old you are".

She was a well-known author and she was only 54. Plastic surgery is more involved than teeth whitening, folks!

31. This hits too close to home...it happened to a friend of mine two weeks ago!
I couldn't believe it...she was an older woman who had liposuction to remove a bunch of ovehanging belly fat after losing a lot of weight. Apparently, she had to wear a "girdle" for a couple of weeks to hold the tissue in place so the skin would properly re-attach to the underlying whatever it is skin is attached to.

After a couple of weeks in the contraption, she finally felt well enough to go out, so she and her husband went for a car ride and stopped for a bite of lunch. After lunch she complained of "feeling funny." Within an hour she was dead...a few times. They revived her in the ambulance at least three times, and got her to the hospital and put her on the table, where she died again and couldn't be revived. The docs said it was directly related to the procedure and the girdle contraption. She was a phenomenal woman, just wanted to look prettier for her hubby.

My heart goes out to Kanye and his family. So senseless.

34. Oh boy, I'm so sorry for your loss
That is such a senseless way to die. I'd rather be old, fat and ugly than to be dead. Perhaps this will put a spotlight on how dangerous these procedures can be and people will think a little more about the risk before they have any cosmetic surgery.

33. She sounds like she was one amazing woman
After 31 years rising through the teaching ranks to chair the English Department at Chicago State, Donda West retired in 2004 to manage her son's burgeoning career. She also headed up Super Good, the parent company of the emcee's fast-growing business empire, which includes apparel, accessories and other lifestyle products, and was the chairwoman of the Kanye West Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to increasing literacy and preventing youths from dropping out of school.

May she rest in peace.

39. The family is asking that donations be made in Donda's name to the family's foundation
http://www.kanyewestfoundation.org/

Kanye West, his family and friends would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and kind words that have come in from across the country since the death of his mother, Dr. Donda West.

After working in higher education for 31 years, Dr. Donda West and Kanye West co-founded the Kanye West Foundation with the mission of helping to combat the severe dropout problem in high schools across the country. The first and signature initiative of the Kanye West Foundation is Loop Dreams. Designed to capitalize on students existing interest in hip-hop, Loop Dreams challenges students to learn more about what’s behind hip-hop culture in order to help them develop skills, express themselves creatively and be empowered.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. West’s name to the Kanye West Foundation/Loop Dreams Teacher Training Institute. Those donations can be made by visiting the Foundation’s Web site, www.KanyeWestFoundation.org or by mail at Kanye West Foundation, 8560 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069.
