Masked gunmen fire into crowd of Venezuelan Chavez opponents....
From the New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/08/world/americas/08venez.html?ref=todayspaper

(snip)
Masked gunmen shot into a group of students on Wednesday at this country’s most prestigious university. The students were returning from a march here protesting changes to the Constitution proposed by President Hugo Chávez that could allow him to remain in power indefinitely.

At least eight people were injured in the mix of gunfire and rock-throwing at the Central University of Venezuela, including two who were shot, according to Antonio Rivero, the national director of civil protection. The violence followed a march by tens of thousands of students to the Supreme Court.

“At the moment the students arrived, they were attacked by others wearing hoods,” Mr. Rivero said in comments broadcast on the radio here. “We do not know what faction they belong to,” he said of the assailants.

Protests and counterprotests intensified throughout Venezuela ahead of a referendum on the president’s 69 amendments scheduled for a Dec. 2 vote. The National Assembly, controlled almost entirely by followers of Mr. Chávez, approved the entire package on Friday.

Since then, Gen. Raúl Isaías Baduel, the retired army commander, has broken with the president and condemned the proposed charter, giving new vitality to Mr. Chávez’s opponents. This week, Mr. Chávez called General Baduel a “traitor,” denouncing the man who in 2002 helped put him back in power after a brief coup.

5. First I've read of it...
and posting it doesn't necessarily equate into a hate chavez post. Seems to me you just don't like the content and that upsets you.

9. I missed it because I wasn't around...
some folks aren't here 24/7 and many times posts do get missed...that's why there are a lot of repeat postings of news articles.

7. No, it is slanted. For example, that minister didn't
"break with Chavez since then" -- he was replaced in JULY and the NYTs knows that.

11. I would imagine the masks are the give away...
Wouldn't want any one to be identified as Prince employees.
They learned their lesson in the Florida "recount" protester
incident, as I recall.

CIA Knew of Plot Against Venezuela's Chavez
Leader Not Warned, Documents Reveal
by Bart Jones and Letta Tayler
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/1124-02.htm

The U.S. government knew of an imminent plot to oust Venezuela's leftist president, Hugo Chávez, in the weeks prior to a 2002 military coup that briefly unseated him, newly released CIA documents show, despite White House claims to the contrary a week after the putsch.

Yet the United States, which depends on Venezuela for nearly one-sixth of its oil, never warned the Chávez government, Venezuelan officials said.

The Bush administration has denied it was involved in the coup or knew one was being planned. At a White House briefing on April 17, 2002, just days after the 47-hour coup, a senior administration official who did not want to be named said, "The United States did not know that there was going to be an attempt of this kind to overthrow - or to get Chávez out of power."

Yet based on the newly released CIA briefs, an analyst said yesterday that did not appear to be the case.

"This is substantive evidence that the CIA knew in advance about the coup, ..........

13. I wouldn't trust either side with this.
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 09:55 PM by originalpckelly
It has been previously alleged that more right-wing fascist elements of the Venezuelan political spectrum have fired on their own during the coup attempt years ago. It has been more recently alleged that the same plotters are helping these students.

On the other hand, we can know from the actions of Chavez that he appears to have a heavy hand toward the opposition.

Anything is possible.

This is not a case where one side is right and the other wrong, they're all wrong.
