Man Had Served Time For Massachusetts Murder

POSTED: 9:31 pm EST November 22, 2007
UPDATED: 7:57 am EST November 23, 2007

BOSTON --

A convicted Massachusetts killer now accused of slaying a neighbor couple in Washington
once threatened to kill presidential candidate Mitt Romney, according to court records.

Daniel Thomas Tavares Jr., 41, was charged in Tacoma, Wash., with two counts of aggravated
first-degree murder. Tavares fatally shot Brian and Beverly Mauck, 30 and 28, after Brian
Mauck insulted him when he tried to collect a $50 debt, according to court documents.

Daniel Thomas Tavares Jr.

According to records obtained by the Boston Herald, while in jail in Massachusetts for killing
his mother with a carving knife, Tavares threatened to kill then governor Romney and other
public officials when he got out of jail.

Tavares left Massachusetts after serving a 16-year sentence for the murder, but only after
Superior Court Judge Kathe M. Tuttman denied a request from prosecutors that he be held on bail
for an assault while in prison. Tuttman was appointed by Romney and her decision to release
Tavares could become an issue in the presidential campaign.

“He was the governor - he picked this judge,” said Beverly Mauck’s father, Darrel Slater, 51.
“He should be answering for what happened.” “It’s a great crime plan at the expense of everyone
else in the country,” said Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s office in Washington.
“It’s almost like it’s a free pass.”

A spokesman for Romney said Tavares should not have been released.

I can't stand Romney but how is he responsible for what another person decides to do?

I don't get it.

"killed his mother with a carving knife" :scared:

Glad he's off the streets...again!! :grr:

1. The point is, Romney picked a stupid judge for POLITICAL reasons.
A judge who, like Romney, makes PISSPOOR decisions.

Romney's the guy who straps Irish setters to the top of the car for twelve hour trips.

He's also the guy who line-item vetoed twenty five mil in tunnel inspection funds. Of course, what happens next? An UNINSPECTED tunnel roof collapses, and kills a newlywed!

Bad judgment--that's what this is about.

3. But he had no way to predict what the judge would do.
Mom killer vowed to take out Romney

According to records obtained by the Herald, while in jail for killing his mother
with a carving knife, Tavares in February 2006 threatened to kill the governor,
attorney general, Bristol sheriff and other public officials when he got out of jail.

Tavares skipped town after the bail waiver and is now charged in the heinous murder
of newlyweds Brian and Beverly Mauck of Graham, Wash. Relatives and friends of the
Mauck family called on GOP presidential hopeful Romney to be accountable for the judge
he nominated.

Tuttman, 55, is a former Essex prosecutor who headed the family crimes and sexual
assault unit before her widely praised appointment to the bench in 2006. In 2005,
Tuttman received the Massachusetts Office of Victim Assistance Criminal Justice
Award for Outstanding Victim Advocacy.

From that award in 2005, I would think she would've had the smarts to not release this person.
but I still fail to see how Romney could've predicted the judge would do something like this.

I do think that Tuttman should be fired asap though! What a complete 'moran'!

5. Well, Essex county didn't get any safer under the Romney regime, so there ya go...
This judge was STUPID. You don't bail out a guy who has threatened the guv-nah; you just don't. You say "No bail for YOU, asshole!"

I'm with Larry Sabato on this one (per your cite):

Said a friend of the Maucks, Allen Glasenapp, 50, of Washington, “Obviously at this stage in the game, one would say that Mitt Romney’s appointment of this judge was an error in judgment.”

While some speculated that the nomination could emerge as a thorny issue for Romney, noted political scientist Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics said, “Romney has a way out, but he hasn’t used it. This is so egregious he ought to come out and say, ‘I’m sorry I appointed (the judge).’ ”

Sabato said Romney’s nomination of the judge, however, is hardly equal to the famed Michael Dukakis furlough program that allowed Willie Horton to leave prison and brutalize a Maryland couple - helping to sink the 1988 presidential campaign of former Gov. Dukakis in the process.

“If he doesn’t (apologize),” Sabato said, “he’s asking for a negative attack ad, which would be a devastation. It will compare him perhaps unfairly to the Dukakis furlough program.”

BUT, can you imagine, if this guy said this about a Democrat the Fox News, and rush would be agreeing all over them selves.
