Vandals destroy 150 Headstones in Baltimore
One hundred headstones in the B'nai Israel Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland were turned over. Some even split in two. I think this type of vandalism is the most reprehensible type there can be. Whether the cemetery is Jewish, Catholic or public I think it should be classified as a hate crime. And that any body caught should be prosecuted to the limit and not just given a slap on the wrist.

1. This makes me so angry.
And, frankly, scared.

2. how sad and ugly is that?
I don't know whether this can be prosecuted as a hate crime, though I don't see why not. How painful for the families this must be.

3. this type of vandalism is the most reprehensible type there can be...?
umm...it's a field full of dead bodies.

i'm definitely not condoning the behaviour- but some people in this country are way to hung up over dead things. life is for the living- we should concentrate our energies on our current situations, not mourning the past.

i've always found cemetaries to be a tremendous waste of space, and have never understood why people consider them such "sacred" places...

4. First of all,
"vandalism" is, by definition, a crime against property. It wasn't being compared to crimes against people.

Secondly, respect for the dead, respect for history, and respect for the various religious practices of a people are generally considered important things.

This type of crime is ugly. And it is intended to inflict fear on all the Jews in the area. "This is what we think of you!"

I fight when Walmart wants to build on Indian graves, too.
