14. To young to remember the Burma Shave ads?

It was always something to look forward to on a long road trip. lemme see is I can find a link ... here is one from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma-Shave

These were series signs that advertised a shaving cream, but were also an American phenomena from the 1930's til the 1960's that many travelers enjoyed and even looked forward to finding as they journeyed. They showed up in farmer's fields or on the side of the road maybe a half block or so apart. Then as you drove down the road, each sign had a part of a sentence or poem. So you got something like this:

Listen birds / these signs cost money / so roost awhile / but don't get funny / Burma-Shave.

Or: The wolf / is shaved / so neat and trim / Red Riding Hood / is chasing him / Burma-Shave

More examples on the Wikipedia site and they can be very funny.

I really think a freeway blogger might actually BLOG that way, albeit short ones and something like the Burma shave ads would REALLy get attention if they were clever enough.

Just a thought, what can I say, I am an idea person.

22. Make 'em closer together

...they should be only a few words at a time so the driver as well as passengers can read them, and perhaps a block or so apart. Time yourself for a minute (60 MPH = 1 sign a minute). You will find it is a l-o-n-g time. You only wait at stop lights on the average of 40-60 seconds, tho often it seems like 5 minutes, see? If you time the cycle of a stop light you will not believe it, but it is pretty standard to have them cycle at that amount of time.

Thanks so much for considering the idea. I am telling ya, it was an icon to have Burma Shave signs on the road in America at one time. You would already have a generation or two familiar with them (the Boomers are most likely the last generation remembering them). Maybe it is time to revive those signs to get important messages across!

23. Not very long. I reckon the longest was 12 hours and the shortest

was about 30 minutes or so.

The one that was up for 12 hours just had the number "3,000" in bright red; this was right after our troop deaths in Iraq/Afghanistan hit that level.

Almost time for a "4,000" I reckon.
