Poll: Most Southerners oppose Bush handling of Iraq war

By MARGARET LILLARD
Associated Press Writer

RALEIGH, N.C. - A majority of Southerners are unhappy with President Bush's performance, particularly his leadership in Iraq, and only a little more optimistic that a Democratic-led Congress will do a better job, a survey released Friday shows.

"It's kind of like a race to the bottom and Bush is getting there quicker," said Hunter Bacot, director of the Elon University Poll.

The response was especially telling because it was an open-ended query made at the beginning of the poll, before surveyors mentioned Iraq or any other issue, Bacot said. "It's just off the top of their heads," he added.

Sixty-four percent of respondents disapproved or strongly disapproved of Bush's handling of the Iraq war _ up from 57 percent last year _ while 31 percent approved or strongly approved of it, a decrease from 38.5 percent last year.

"The war is his boondoggle and it's going to be his legacy," Bacot said.

those days as a high school student in Mississippi, and everybody else was voting Republican either because their parents did or because they believed in the big government, tax and spend, big brother liberal bogeyman invented by the right. I didn't know anything about economics or politics except the bite-sized pieces of garbage spewed by the corporate news outlets, and they weren't likely any better than I was.

5. Go bite yourself
See, if you said that about any other ethnic minority group, you'd be called a bigot and an idiot. A somewhat higher percentage of Southerners than elsewhere in the U.S. don't believe in evolution, because of the prevalent church doctrine in the South. But there's a hell of a lot more integration in Atlanta and Albany than in New York and Chicago. Boston was the place that had riots over busing, you might remember, not Birmingham.

7. well there it is ...
the usual anti-southern scapegoating.

And aren't most northerners arrogant know-it-alls who are completely ignorant about the south?

10. David Duke is from LA., but found his best fund raising for the klan
to be in Wisconsin, that bastion of the confederacy below the Mason Dixon line.

8. A lot of people....
move and retire to the south with ignorant, pre-concieved notions. Rarely do they return from whence they came. It's sad that many here on DU, professing to be progressives, engage in the same type of ignorant attacks against the south, that they rail against if it is a minority, immigration, and gay/lesbian issues, etc. The south affords those who claim to be open-minded and progressive, the chance to express their bigotry without the repercussions they would expreience attacking another group of people as a whole. Cowardly and elitist comes to mind. It pains me that I am describing so-called progressive democrats with those words. Thanks.
