Report: Spears' Hospital Escort Cost Police $25K
Cars, Motorcycles, Helicopters Involved In Hospital Trip

The tally is in for the police motorcade that escorted pop singer Britney Spears in her latest emergency trip to the hospital.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the operation cost the Los Angeles Police Department an estimated $25,000, though a police spokeswoman did not confirm the figure.

Spears was seen arriving at the UCLA Medical Center before dawn Thursday, accompanied by the type of escort normally reserved for a president -- nearly a dozen officers on motorcycles, as well as more in police cars and at least one helicopter hovering overhead.

1. True but if the trash had killed herself or herself and others, think about the cost
the LAPD could have had with that media circus. They might have saved themselves a lot of money.

4. If they could stop the stalkers
that follow her around the city for pictures they could probably kill two birds with one stone. Cut back on the police protection and maybe improve her mental situation.

I can't believe it, I'm actually starting to feel sorry for her. Somebody has to step in and get her under real (read: Not fucking dr. phil) Psychiatric care and soon.

5. I have to admit that when I saw that parade, I got mad.
Not that she doesn't deserve treatment and whatever measures it takes to get her safe and so on.

But, mad for the 10 times I couldn't get a single bit of help for Doug when he had a meltdown and wound up dealing with injuries or destroyed property or police or arrests or other cR@P instead of a nice ride to the hospital with an escort. And media, too! lol

6. Or my cousin, when he got despondent after his parents' deaths
and went off his meds just to feel better for a while and fell down the rabbit hole for about 6 months. He managed to destroy his life pretty thoroughly and no one was able to help. I'm glad to say he's back, but he's got a lot of hard work to do for a lot of years to get completely back.

"Danger to oneself" is interpreted far too strictly by the law. When somebody is completely out of control and trashing everything in his life, he's a danger to himself. He doesn't need to pick up a gun or even a razor blade.

10. I think I have to write about this and send it to the paper for
the opinion page. There's too many families here dealing with relatives that have violent psychotic episodes (that can last for days) and there's no help for them. Mobile Psych finds any excuse not to come out and evaluate and the police can only take people to jail. It's so dangerous and completely dysfunctional.

11. Please feel free to use my crack about interpreting
the "danger to oneself" too stringently.

9. Because Of The Media Circus Etc.

They probably needed that many to ensure her safety. Have you seen how aggressive some of these photogs are, as they relate to her?

13. they could have just sent one unmarked with plainclothes
and the nutty photogs would have been none the wiser until she was long gone...but that would have required common sense...

just nuts...one circus begets another...

8. Sounds kinda like your average wreck on the Interstate.
Every cop within 50 miles comes roaring in, lights flashing and sirens wailing. Single car accident, two dozen police cars. Hey, you don't want to be the only one to miss it, do you?

14. Total Bullshit....
Picture that you are a Los Angeles homeowner in danger of losing your home because of the current economic condition and fast rising property taxes....now think about how many times the police worked that hard to prevent you from being inconvenienced...What? You mean they haven't???
And past ALL the OTHER bullshit just what in the fuck was the purpose of the helicopter???You are talking a HUGE expense that could help this situation how?The huge spotlight-why, to illuminate paparazzi hiding in the darkness???Flir for those not using flashes??
The big question here is this-What moron authorized this ridiculous use of city's precious resources at a time when normal citizen's quality of life is sinking?

15. All I can say, is that she must have a pretty shitty doctor
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 02:30 PM by SoCalDem
If her physician was "worried about her mental health", why didn't he get off his ass and GO TO HER HOME...and personally take her to the hospital??

YEARS AGO, when I had my "meltdown", MY doctor would call my son and/or best friend to "check on me"...and there were a few times they "ratted me out"..and were told to BRING me to an appointment immediately...and this same doctor was known to have made housecalls on recalcitrant patients who had no family support systems..

There was NO REASON to "call in the national guard" to get one 20-something woman to a nearby hospital..

16. Times have changed, my friend. When I needed to hospitalize
my mom in the 70s, I got ALL kinds of help.

When Doug was seeing one of the most respected shrinks in the city with 11 books to his name, I had to leave Doug alone, GO TO HIM, and beg him for a hospitalization. It's a whole different world now.
