What can anyone tell me about Windows Vista?
Is it good or bad and why? I was looking at a laptop and it has Vista on it. Thanks!

1. Overpriced and worthless
not an upgrade, just a method for taking your money.

my opinion.

21. Yep, I'd definitely recommend that as the best Windows option now.
With the Zune visual style, it's very tolerable:

They don't have it available on their site anymore, since Vista was released, but you can download it here:
http://originalpckelly.googlepages.com/ZuneDesktopTheme.msi

Or just search for it in Google.

3. Piece of shit
I'm a Mac user so it doesn't bother me. But my wife just bought a new laptop also and much of old software was incompatible.

It's been several months and I still don't think she's fixed everything.

are you sure?
have you givien it enough thought?
Why did you click on that icon?
what were you thinking?
did you clean uo after yourself?
Why not?
Who's your daddy?
Why are you doing that?

If you install Vista - expect to spend alot of time answering a laot of questions...

7. Thanks, No i don't want to intall vista, I am in the market for a new laptop
and one I was looking at comes with Vista on it. I don't know anything about Vista, but seems everytime Microsoft "upgrades" it always sucks.

36. I think around $1100
And if I am forced to buy Vista on my next machine I will switch to Mac. I can't BELIEVE that they scrambled all the toolbars and force users to relearn Word. I am a highly skilled Word user and it's infuriating that they've moved everything around and expect you to start from zero and learn it all over again.

5. Anything specific you'd like to know?

Vista has been running fine for me for months. I've installed it on dozens of computers and have not had any problems.

At introduction, a lot of software had problems with it. But it's pretty solid now.

If your new notebook comes with Vista, you can rest assured that everything included would work properly.

11. That's what I figured.
It will work well.

Keep in mind, you have no choice. You really can't buy a system legally with Windows XP. You're down to Linux, OS X and Vista.

I'm a long time user of each and can answer any questions you might have.

14. Not really that new.

When XP came out, after a little while you couldn't buy Windows 2000.

Etc.

My point was that if somebody wants to avoid buying Vista on a new computer, it's kind of hard.

19. For notebooks, you're kind of stuck.

Now, if you buy a notebook that comes with Vista Business, you are technically allowed to use a copy of Windows XP Pro that you get on your own.

You'd have to install it and get all the drivers (if they're available) from the manufacturer. But Microsoft left that possibility open because of large companies that were threatening to sue if they couldn't still use XP.

35. You may want to check at a local computer shop if you have one nearby.
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 01:34 AM by kgfnally
I personally would never, ever buy a computer from a big box store. If you can, go to a local shop instead.

Contrary to what you've been told on this thread, you can quite easily purchase a PC with not only Windows XP installed, but also with the disk for the operating system in your hand, so if your computer crashes for some reason, you can reinstall it yourself and save sixty or seventy bucks. That's another reason to go to a local shop- you often get the OEM copy of that product key. At least, I always have.

edit: if you're looking for a laptop, though, you may not have that option.

6. It sucks worse than a $5 hooker with overbite and braces
But some people actually like that kind of thing.

I mean Vista, not the $5HWO&B.

9. IIt's not compatible with lexmark printers
Lexmarks are cheap the ink cost more than the printer, but buying a new printer was not in my budget. Wouldn't work with my dial up accelerator either. Now my dialup is slower than before if that could be possible.

Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 12:52 AM by Greylyn58
especially since it was announced that MS was going to be sending out two new service packs this year to improve XP and make it run faster.

I just hope whatever it is doesn't screw up XP as it currently stands.

zero problems here also
I use a USB-port Targus fan under it that is smaller to dissipate what I consider excessive heat.

I've had it since Thanksgiving or around that time.

We are having two new computers custom built by Digital Storm. They're expensive. They will have XP, and not Vista.
