In 1988, I didn't vote in the primary, but I did vote for Dukakis (and took a lot of ribbing for it in my repug-leaning suburb at age 19).
In 1992, I was a year or so into a right-wing kick caused by listening to too much Limbaugh and a serious lack of life experience - I voted for Bush Sr. - Again, didn't vote in the primaries.
In 1996, after traveling the world a bit and seeing how other countries do things, and having realized that Bill Clinton did NOT destroy the country and drive it into depression, I voted for Clinton in the primaries and general election.
In 2000, I had become frustrated with 8 years of right-leaning policy by Clinton, and by Gore's attempt to run as a conservative democrat. Bush was running as a compassionate conservative, and Gore seemed to have it sewn up, so I cast a protest vote. For Nader. In Florida. (Yes, I am deeply, deeply sorry.)
In 2004, I had no hesitation - I voted for Dean in the primaries and don't regret it. Clark was also a good candidate. I was rather mystified as to why people voted for Kerry. Still am.
But now it's 2008. I'm faced with a choice - vote for Hillary - a bright, talented woman who has positioned herself as a conservative dem, but whose true sentiments may be a bit more progressive. She's very friendly (beholden to?) corporations and carries a good deal of baggage. But I have no doubt that she will run a helluva campaign and not go down without a fight (like some other recent candidates have...)
Then there's Obama - also bright, talented and immensely likeable, in place of Hillary's negatives, he's got THE NAME and a muslim dad, both of which will be exploited relentlessly in the GE. He's also a little more establishment and corporate-friendly than I'd like, but I do think he might inspire a lot of new people to vote.
And then there's the off chance that I might just write in Edwards, since that's who I've been for since day one.
Every day I vacillate between these choices, and it is strange to feel so uncertain about what to do.
I guess I'll let you know what I did Super Tuesday night!
