Help me -- I agree with FOX
GoDaddy.com, my longtime favorite website for registering domain names and ultra-budget hosting is the brainchild of a man named Bob Parsons. In a lawsuit with Network Solutions Bob forced NS to allow other independent companies to offer domain names for sale, which lowered the price of DN registration by a factor of ten. Bob also ratcheted up competition on web hosting, also making that service much more affordable. These two factors allowed many small businesses to have their own website for the first time. Good work, Bob!

Now Bob has a weakness for, among other things, car racing and attractive young women. Last year he began sponsoring a female Indy car driver named Danica Patrick, and since has begun promoting his website using sexist ads like this one:

http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/media/play.asp?isc=biggame08&mediaID=exposuresp&ci=11198&tab=sb

In it Danica, who is apparently a talented driver, begins to unzip her racing jacket to reveal...something (the entire ad will not be available until later today). She appears uncomfortable in her new role as Ho' In Chief for Bob's web empire, and the ad was supposed to run during the Superbowl today but was rejected by FOX. Bob's response, posted on GoDaddy's homepage? "Fox hands us a lemon. We make lemonade out of beavers."

Yuck.

Anyone have a referral for good, cheap, domain name registration and hosting?

2. Yuck is right. Ugh.
Danica's a good driver. Let her drive and get someone else to be the shop calendar model, if you have to have that kind of thing around.

I wish I knew domain stuff. That's just nasty.

5. Thanks
I already have 10-15 hosting clients with Bluehost, and I love 'em. They're a little more expensive than GD, and I haven't used them for DNR, but will check it out.

4. 1and1.com?
I use them and am mostly satisfied. I'd be interested in other responses to this thread though.

I agree with Fox on this one too. Yech!

6. How is their control panel?
Fairly logical, works consistently? A big criterion for me.

11. It works for me
I don't have too much trouble figuring things out.

But then I am not a big time webmaster, just play around with a few things.

I am going to check out bluehost.com that someone suggested up thread. It seems to have more features than 1and1.com. I am in the process of trying to move a domain from one 1and1.com account to another and am not pleased with the support (or lack thereof) that I am getting, so maybe I will just move it to bluehost. But to be clear, usually I have been very happy with the support from 1and1.com - and most of my problems have been self-inflicted anyway.

7. You need medication if you were watching FOX....
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 12:24 PM by Sarah Ibarruri
... but aside from that, why do women so easily turn into prostitutes? I'm not that way because I value my body too damned much to be displaying it like some pole dancer. I've never understood that. Sure, I know it gets male attention, but the day I feel I can only get male attention by showing my tits, will be the day my self-esteem is the size of a thimble. That's what I think all women who expose their bodies for male attention have: thimble-sized self-esteem, or none at all.

9. I find this case particularly revolting
because it's very difficult for male drivers to get sponsors. Danica was probably anxious to please and was pressured into doing this shit by Bob, who somehow thinks women stripping is a suitable incentive to purchase webhosting.

BTW I never watch FOX, but I do use the GoDaddy website.

13. Well, I work for a despicable company. What we do there is despicable to me.....
... since I need a job to eat and put a roof over my head and the $ helps me help candidates and the elderly, my solution has been to..... FIGHT with all my might in my spare time against what we do at my job. So on the one hand, I promote to make money, and in my spare time, I make bad publicity, not for the specific clients, but in general for the types of clients in the type of job I hold.

That same question was asked on Air America one day. Some kid graduating from college said he had obtained a degree in marketing but that he was a lefty and HATED getting a job in disgusting corporate America, and thereby helping them. I don't recall the lefty guest who answered, but he said, "Do what most do, just get a job, but in your SPARE TIME, work against the machine." B-)

8. Media Temple, 1and1.com... there are plenty of good, affordable services.

If you're just looking for DN registering, there are even more.

10. GoDaddy's regular business practices are despicable.
Last year, I was in the hospital when my domain name expired. When I got out of the hospital, I went to renew the domain name. I couldn't. It had been bought out from under me.

Who bought the domain name? GoDaddy had bought it. The people I paid for the domain name and the webspace had bought my domain name. They told me it would cost eighty dollars, to get my own name back.

It is despicable that a company would try and shaft its own customers like this.

12. They've also become cybersquatters
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 12:39 PM by wtmusic
Many people don't have a problem with squatting, I do. Domain names are a public resource like water or clean air.

I designed a website for a company named Sacramento Recycling last year. When I went to buy the name SACRAMENTORECYCLING.COM (there are no similarly-named companies), I was informed by GoDaddy that it was a "premium name" and would cost me $600.

So I bought SACRAMENTO-RECYCLING.COM for $8 and told them to go to hell.
