FOURTH Middle Eastern Internet Cable "breaks"
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 03:46 PM by Yael
http://www.arabianbusiness.com/510132-internet-problems-continue-with-fourth-cable-break?ln=en

Internet services in Qatar have been seriously disrupted because of damage to an undersea telecoms cable linking the Gulf state to the UAE, the fourth such incident in less than a week.

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said on Sunday the cable was damaged between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das on Friday.

The cause of damage is not yet known, but ArabianBusiness.com has been told unofficially the problem is related to the power system and not the result of a ship's anchor cutting the cable, as is thought to be the case in the other three incidents.

4. I think it might be a demonstration -- "This is what we can do, so you'd better play ball with us."
Or, "Nice little communications system you have here, be a shame if anything were to happen to it."

Someone's up to something, is a *TAD* co-incidental. How common are these cable breakages? Are we just looking at something that happens all the time, but isn't reported on? Or is it really an odd and statistically rare circumstance.

13. FYI You dont need a nuke sub to do this
You do need a scuba tank and a shaped charge. There are commercially manufactured cutting charges sold world wide that would do this. Or if you dont have a few grand you could just make your own..

27. The NSA taps into undersea cable- from May 23, 2001
A good read which also mentions the USS Jimmy Carter Sub

just a small snippet from the article.

Details of the NSA cable-tapping project are sketchy. Individuals who confirm the tap won't specify where or when it occurred. It isn't known whether the cable's operator detected the intrusion, though former NSA officials say they believe it went unnoticed. Nor is it known whether the NSA has attempted other taps since. Efforts to intercept all sorts of signals--ranging from military radar to international phone calls--are among the most highly classified U.S. government operations. Leaking information about interception methods is a federal crime punishable by imprisonment.

30. Interesting, wasn't there a storm ?

Veterans of the undersea fiber-optic cable business say an undersea tap would strain the limits of technology, and cable operators aren't happy that the NSA may have pulled one off. "We don't believe this is possible, but assuming it was, there's no way we want someone trying to get into our cables," says Frank Denniston, chief technical officer for London-based Flag Telecom Holdings Ltd., one of the half-dozen or so companies that dominate the industry.

"It's our job to keep the data on our cables as safe and secure as possible," Denniston adds. "Any tap would automatically create a weakness and could bring down the entire system."
