A quick question about Universal health care, if it happens |
|
For a person like myself who already has a decent health plan through a local union or their employer, what will happen? Will those plans dissolve or what?

gets enacted.
In reality, probably you will still be able to keep what you have for the forseeable future. The immediate fight is really about how to get coverage for people who don't have it, like me.
Under a true single payer plan, though, you wouldn't need your plan for major medical, because most necessary things would be free at the point of service. Ins could still be sold, however, but would be for things like whether you want to have a private room during hospital stays.

2. Depends on the 'universal' plan implemented. |
|
If for example (and not a likely one) real universal healthcare through a public and universal health insurance system: medicare for everyone, were implemented, your plan's redundant coverage would go away. Depending on the details of the implementation, if your plan provided benefits not covered by the standard public system, your union might retain those benefits in a subsidiary plan.
A more likely scenario is one of the truly misguided universal mandate plans, where every individual is required to purchase health insurance. In those plans your union's plan would most likely remain unchanged.
