Husband: The devil killed my wife
http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/775305,CST-NWS-exorcism04.article

February 4, 2008

ODESSA, Texas -- A man accused of killing his wife says he was trying to exorcise a demon from her when the devil entered his body and caused her to die, according to a police probable cause statement.

Jan David Clark, 60, was arrested Friday after authorities went to his home and found Susan Kay Clark's body wrapped in a bed sheet with a cross and sword on top of it.

Officers had gone to the home after being told that Clark had called a friend and said his 59-year-old wife was dead, said Sgt. Gary Duesler said the Ector County Sheriff's Office.

Clark told investigators he had his wife pinned face down on a carpeted floor when she died.

Clark was charged with murder and remained in the Ector County jail on Sunday.

27. Personally I'd arrest GWB
Didn't his god tell him to invade a country and watch one million Iraqis and 4,000 Americans die.

I say arrest everyone with an imaginary friend who is blamed for their criminality.

25. For a while, yes.
I remember an exchange between myself and another participant during a white-water rafting trip:

A.P."We're all gonna die!"

M "Eventually."

How's that for positive thinking?

7. I read somewhere that here in TX if you plead insanity and say
the devil made you do it that juries are much more lenient than if you say God/Jesus made you do it.

13. It's really hard to be declared insane here...
... which can be good or bad I guess. People in Texas like putting people to death, and an insanity defense stops that.

Georgie was never even declared anything, and he's fucking nuts.

33. why would atheists be more sympathetic to someone who blamed the devil?
IIRC that's why TX juries are more lenient. Something to do with not insulting God when one's placing blame for a psychotic killing episode.

14. What an ignorant fucking post
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:00 PM by Chovexani
Swords can be beautifully made works of art, and people from all walks of life collect them. Including me. We collect for a variety of reasons, none of which have anything to do with killing significant others or anyone else for that matter. Some are historical re-enactors, some are martial artists who train with them to workout, some are just geeks for cool looking weapons. Some collect for religious reasons (Sikhs carry ceremonial daggers, Wiccans and many other Pagans use swords and daggers to demarcate sacred space during ritual). Some, all of the above applies (I would be one of those).

Now when are you going to apologize to the Society for Creative Anachronism and the millions of other people who own swords and don't kill anyone?

Edit: Also, I love your bullshit assumption that only men are sword enthusiasts. I'm a woman, and so are all the enthusiasts I know.

29. Looks I Opened A Can O Worms
First off, to my new friends, the sword collectors I apologize for my comments. My intent was to make a quick satirical jab and perhaps make lite of of bad situation.

On my end I don't own any swords, but I do have a small collection of guns. Assault rifles, shotguns, handguns, and even a Russian sniper rifle from WWII. So when I made that comment, in a way I was also taking a stab at myself. I own my guns as I appreciate the history and technology they represent, as I assume sword collectors do too.

So I hope you do accept my apology and forgive me as I do admit, I've always been fascinated by swords.

Best Regards,

Mike

34. Thanks bro
No harm done. :hi: Sorry if I went into rar rar flame mode, it's so hard to tell sympathetic snark from outright stupid around here lately. It's just a sore point for me because I've taken a lot of crap for being a collector. People think you're eccentric when you've got swords, which is not something that bothers me (I wear the label with pride, actually), but the notion that collectors are somehow crazy and dangerous is...dumb. And way too common. The media loves to pounce on things like that.

I just worry that if something happens to me, or they start rounding up liberals for "re-education", the media would have a field day with the stuff in my apartment. "Disturbed leftist collected swords, books on the occult, ninja paraphenalia"

39. Because it can become tiresome, those stereotypes
I was making a small joke. But if it hit's the wrong chord, then I'm the first to step-up.

We're all here to have fun, learn, debate.

Not to step on each others toes and start our own wars. Save that for the Repugs who adopt short sighted positions and then spend a lifetime defending the indefensible, never learning anything in the process.

Take care.

how is a sword "weird"? Ok, a set of Klingon Steak Knives may be weird, but a sword? I'd say beware of people who literally believe in the Devil - they are far more dangerous, imo.

32. Case in point: Why exorcisms aren't often done anymore.
*sigh* There's a reason why there are supposed to be several people involved, led by someone with training who has prepared for it, and why one person is supposed to be monitoring the victim.

If he and his wife really thought she needed an exorcism (it's happened in history), then there were ways to do it properly and safely (and when it doesn't work, it means that the exorcism was not needed but instead some other kind of treatment).
