i think we are all watching a nasty divorce & an ugly custody battle
Going all the way back to Nixon ("the southern strategy") and coming full circle to where we are now, the heart of the republican party has been in the throes of a disfunctional "marriage".

They used to be the party of genteel money..high incomes, high living, highly educated, but they made a deal with the devil, to win some elections, and ended up "marrying" into a crazy family with lots of loony relatives.

For decades the really crazy ones were content to let the "front man" be one of the acceptable Patrician types, because they were able to win elections, and that's what it's all about...winning..

The democrats who were defeated along the way never really presented much of challenge, and the ones who did win, were easily marginalized or coerced into "playing nice".

Perhaps the embarrassment factor has finally gotten to be just too much, and the moneyed-class republicans just want their party back....hence Romney (money guy) & McCain (military complex wet-dream)

Perhaps the republicans know they have little chance of winning this time around, and this might be the time to jettison the fringe groups who have made the republican party a laughing stock.

Maybe they are willing to cast off the racists & bible thumpers & evolution-deniers & global warming deniers & round earth deniers..

Maybe they are willing to sit out the next administration, in hopes that a democrat will at least partially restore the treasury and the reputation of the nation...and then swoop back in and try again..without the loonies..

1. murdering the truth has become too much of a distraction from the real repuke agenda
of murdering the poor and the powerless.

4. Smart, very smart. It doesn't look like a divorce over there, it looks like a war zone
However, we will pull together when this is over

and I do agree with the OPs assertion that the republican party is going through some changes, but those changes aren't even close to what the Eshinhower republicans were. It is more like, Extreme Extreme Right wing conservative, Extreme right wing conservative in my view

5. I can't believe this hasn't been nominated yet.
You've made a great point that was well written. It looks to me, also, like they're trying to dump the loonies, but is it purposefully? There are much more people in this country who can't afford to be Republicans; they have no chance of winning without trying to appeal to the racists, bible thumpers, & ignorant in-bredders.

7. If you are gonna lose the game, you might as well put the freshman QB in and hope for a miracle
or at worst, give him some experience..

I think they are prepared to lose, but in the process, they can also put the tailgate down and push that smelly couch down the ravine...and hit the gas..

I think the money guys are tired of being associated with the "Give Terri a drink" and the crotch sniffers in the GOP..

They want them G O N E ..
