DUers stopped reading about 2-3 years ago. We have threads that are more repetitious than an echo chamber. We have subthreads that're nothing but last-word staring contests. We have duplicate threads GALORE! Since the same narrow issues get rehashed in duplicate threads, people don't feel like what they might spend some time and effort composing will get read when it's BURIED below the brain-farts of Dig-me's and other emotional adolescents so they start YET ANOTHER thread! It's like Romper Room on sugar and caffeine but without adult supervision. Hell ... people don't even use the Alert function judiciously ... since it seems most don't even know what the rules are let alone how to quote the rule broken.

It's ridiculous.

I've pretty much stayed away from the primary threads from the get-go, and have used "alert" only once, ever - a totally hateful post I found offensive to the whole DU community: And that wasn't even the newbie who attacked me four times in the same thread and got tombstoned before I'd even had a chance to read his last reply.

Instead of taking personal offense when someone goes completely insane on a topic, I usually end up hitting "Recommend" so more people can enjoy the unintentional freeper/lurker/disruptor humor.

4. When we step down from DEFCON, the page-view count kicks in.

So that's not the page views since the thread originated. It's the PVs since DEFCON was deactivated.
