John Mellencamp deals righteously with the McCain camp over using his music..
Mellencamp Music for McCain? Like Paper & Fire

Die-hard Democrat John Mellencamp wasn't asking John McCain to stop playing his songs at campaign rallies -- just trying to, you know, shame him a little. And, hey, it seems to have worked!

In an e-mail this week to campaign manager Rick Davis , Mellencamp's publicist suggested McCain should find the singer's rousing classic-rockers like "Pink Houses" and "Our Country" to be an "embarrassment."

"Mr. Mellencamp identifies very strongly with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and was supportive (with these same songs!) of the candidacy of John Edward . . ." wrote the singer's rep, Bob Merlis, adding that wife Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp was a delegate at the '04 Democratic convention. "Are you sure you want to use his music to promote Senator McCain's efforts?"

Asked about the Mellencamp oeuvre, a McCain rep told our colleague Juliet Eilperin: "We're not playing it anymore."

1. RRRepublican "music lovers" really are that stupid. How twisted does one's thinking process
have to be to miss the point of "Pink Houses?"

3. Good for Mellencamp.
I often think of this issue. When RW radio uses progressive rock I wonder if the composers and performers aren't really annoyed.

Ever since Reagan swiped Springsteen's "Born in the USA" the blatant hypocrisy has been astonishing.

Talk about style over substance.

yikes

18. Yeah I remember that
LOL.. I also remember when in 1992 Bushco came out to FDR music.

Another thing I remember is when both Bushies attempted to use Harry Truman's name and the late Margaret Truman would tell them cut it out. She even threaten to sue them if they didn't stop.

Maybe these right-wing idiots should stick to Barney the Dinosaur song or that lee greenwood crap.

23. In 2002 Normie Coleman actually started singing snips from "The Times They are A-Changing"
at various times around the state - including at the state Republican convention. Unconfirmed rumor had it that he received a cease and desist order and there was a point where Normie did stop that behavior.

24. good for Dylan
but the disconnect between the lyrics and the sentiments of these artists, and the ideologies these short sighted selfish people put forth is just plain stunning. Or perhaps worse.

5. IRC, This Has Happened Before
I think he used Springsteen's "Born In The USA" (or some other repugnican did) and got a C & D letter. Also I think other candidates have used Mellencamps tunes as well as Neil Young.

Sheesh...can't these asshats use their own "musicians". I think McCain should use Ted Nugent's "Wang Bang Poon Tang" or Charlie Daniels "Uneasy Rider"

Here's kudos to the "Little Bastard"...a true Progressive Democrat!

19. 'Uneasy Rider' is a very progressive song.
They guy with the 'peace sign, the mag wheels and the 4 on the floor' was Daniels. Nugent even wrote a progressive song called 'The Great White Buffalo' about the white man slaughtering the Buffalo whereas the Indians took only what they needed.

16. Somehow, playing "Pink Houses" at any GOP rally...
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 10:24 AM by AngryOldDem
...is cruelly ironic and insulting, just one more "up-yours" to the lower- and middle-classes that GOP ideology has hurt the most. I really, really have to wonder if these geniuses who program music for these things actually listen to the lyrics, or just use the old American Bandstand formula of, "It has a really good beat and I can dance to it."

Good for Mellencamp to tell McCain to cease and desist.
