4. Maryland!

The Maryland flag contains the family crest of the Calvert and Crossland families. Maryland was founded as an English colony in 1634 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The black and Gold designs belong to the Calvert family. The red and white design belongs to the Crossland family.

55. It wasn't adopted until after the civil war.
It kind of represented a re-uniting of the warring factions as well, since Confederate Maryland troops had used the Crossland design, while Union troops used the Calvert.

Really, all jumbled up with the archaic coat of arms crap and all that busy looking little squares in god-awful colors. Lord Calvert's style is no longer in fashion and that flag reflects why.

20. Heavy Symbolism Here
"To reach a suns rays of glowing bronze grace leaves the lake and rises toward empyrean sun. The swans array, the crane stands veiled grace. Tunnement to the omen of the object form. And lighten pon day as scintillate rays augurate arrival of a serephic form"

That's some heavy symbolism.

27. At an early age I came to see the flag as a symbol of jingoism used to aid in fostering...
Irrational attitudes of submission to authority. I've always been an anti-authoritarian, artistic/musician type who doesn't run in circles that contain people who get all revved up over flags and what they represent. Then again, I see patriotism as a form of imposed ignorance.

Not only do I like the bears, but the three bands of color are the same as those in the flags of The Netherlands and Luxembourg (although the latter has a paler shade of blue).

Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 02:38 PM by Blue_In_AK
Eight stars of gold on a field of blue -
Alaska's flag. May it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes, and the flow'rs nearby;
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams;
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear" - the "Dipper" - and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
Over land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska's flag - to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.

The flag song makes me cry every time I hear it. Shit, I'm crying right now just reading it.

The Green Mountain Boys flag flew over the Battle of Ticonderoga and over the independent nation of Vermont (before statehood and the adoption of a much more boring blue flag-with-state-seal design). Among many other locations, it still flies proudly over my computer desk :)
