snow removal...how do your places of work handle it? I fell on ice at work
I teach and on my lunch break I HAVE to leave campus to smoke so I was walking to my vehicle and slipped on the ice. I had the door open so I caught myself between my car door and the drivers seat and door frame. I didn't fall completely but totally torked my back

when I went to report it our principal said "other teachers chose not to leave today because they knew it was slick. It is not our duty to clean the parking lot. You should have been more careful"

now...I do NOT want a work comp claim ect...I just thought they ought to know how bad it was

but I thought that was pretty crappy treatment

so tomorrow, I am going to the doctor and staying home and they better NOT charge me a day for it

I am in horrible pain and really sore

4. I'm at a college data center and they have grounds people that

plow a path around our parking lot and shoot out heavy grit sand from their truck. The custodians each deal with their own buildings for walks, entrances, etc. They shovel, broom, and also sprinkle rock salt as needed. The only problem comes when we get snow during/after lunch. The custodians work day ends at 1pm, so anything that falls between then and when we get out, we take care of ourselves. My hubby is an assoc. dir. here and has shoveled pathways to peoples cars, walked them to their cars, and brushed their cars off for them. Our director has also made the call to let most of us get out of here a bit early at times inorder to avoid some of the heavier rush hour traffic on the road. We're at a 24/7 data center, so there's always some cars in the lot and someone around for help.

Of course, that was years ago - We're in Delaware. What's that stuff called 'snow'?

5. My private sector employer sucks at ice/snow removal
Parking lot gets plowed. They only shovel and salt near the steps and walk near the front door.

From there, on your own. But at least they let the smokers smoke at the bottom of the steps.

Hope your back is ok. I'd say you might have a case against your employer for any out-of-pocket expenses.

6. I'm pretty sure it IS their responsibility to clear the snow and
ice from the parking lot if the school is open.

A woman that worked where my sister does fell on the ice and hit her head and ended up with serious brain problems. She sued the company and won.

7. Hitting your head can be deadly; some years ago an older woman
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 05:39 PM by mnhtnbb
slipped on ice, hit her head, and died from the head injury when we lived in St. Joseph, MO.

And I think it is the responsibility of parking lot owners to clear snow/sand for ice.
Any slip and falls would be covered by their liability insurance.

8. Yeah, this poor woman has never been the same....
she had to quit her job and has a lot of problems now.

Parking lot owners are definitely responsible for snow removal and sanding ice.

9. PS.........it was a crappy way to treat you and
the principal is full of shit. I would contact the school board and let them know. It is SOMEONE'S responsibility to see that parking lot is cleared.

11. At a public school? They damn well do have a responsibility to clean the parking lot
If they don't clean the lot, just see how quick Jr's parents sue when the little guy slips and cracks his skull. Your principal is an idiot and is putting himself and the school district into serious legal jeopardy.

Hell, around here, they go overboard for this very reason, scraping the lot, spreading cinders, and then enough salt to rust out all the cars on the lot.

12. The parking lot owner is responsible for safety.
My office landlord told me the other day that he prefers to keep the lot extra clean and lay down extra salt for safety to avoid problems.

You may not need to file a work comp claim, but just like any other parking lot user, you may be able to have them help you with expenses related to your injury.

Don't let you back go without proper treatment and rehab, it can lead to bigger problems in the future if it does not heal properly.

13. Public school?
Sounds like county property then, which is basically private property.

Go see your doc and then do whatever they tell you to do. If you're more injured then you believe you are, and it does happen, then file a damn claim. It is there responsibility to keep those paths cleared. If my husband had to walk up a path to get one of the kids out of school and fell like you did, he could be dead because he has a morphine pain pump. Schools don't have a "walk at own risk" signs on their grounds.

14. The campus I work on has as an agreement with the host city
so city trucks remove ice from campus streets and the parking lots, I believe our own in-house maintaince crews salt down the sidewalks.

20. Hope you feel better
Here is a little advice if you live in a place that gets snow/ice. Buy some "spikeys", they are little slip on traction devies for your shoes. One thing I learned is no matter how well a place is plowed or sanded you will always find that one spot to slip and land on you butt. Ouch
